pickAnd Jemisin sticks the landing in this one. The origin of the stone eaters wasn't exactly what I expected, the throwaway use of the word "magic" by Nassun in The Obelisk Gate is ignored, in a way, and I still maintain that Hoa Dumbledored Essun a bit. I love this book, though, and would definitely reread as soon as I've calmed down.
pickThe Obelisk Gate answers some questions raised in The Fifth Season, and raises a couple more questions in turn. It isn't my favorite book out of the trilogy, which doesn't mean it's bad because this entire series is just BRILLIANT.
(Maybe I just had a hard time reconciling the Schaffa in this book to the Schaffa in the first one?)
pickI'm breaking my Litsy hiatus for N.K. Jemisin' The Broken Earth series, which is insanely good. I've never been this invested in a new SFF book in a while, and although the narration in the first book is a little...dragging, powering through that first part was well worth it.
pickThis is my first foray into the world of Borges, and I think it's a solid collection. (Some of it I have no patience for, but a lot of it is brilliant and is worth trudging through some of his more self-indulgent work.)
pickThe book isn't quotable or "profound," but that doesn't mean it isn't any good. The story is straightforward and Craig reads like a typical 15 year old boy who loves his family, wants to succeed in life, and get the (a?) girl. He just needed to take a side trip to a mental facility, is all.
pickThis is a pretty fun book. I like how the entire thing played out (pun intended,) even though at times things seemed too easy for Luka.
pickI love this wonderfully weird, witty book. I think it's best read in one or as few sittings as possible though--I read this whenever I could in the span of a very busy month, so I had to go back to remember certain details.
pickI've never seen the English language so beautifully butchered. The book welcomes you with Alex, and you're laughing at/with him, and towards the end the book reminds you that THE STORY INVOLVES NAZIS, and you know what that means.
so-soInteresting, but nothing groundbreaking. Props for referencing Kanye and Dan Harmon, I guess.
pickI had to stop reading this at a certain point because I was extra worried about one character--I was THIS close to putting it in the freezer a la Joey Tribbiani. I honestly haven't felt this much anxiety over a fictional character since Theo Decker.
