Lapvona: A Novel | Ottessa Moshfegh
post image
Pickpick

Wow! Each of her books are so distinct from each other and from what anyone else (I‘ve read) is doing right now. 5⭐️ contender for best of the year!

Welcome to Lapvona, a medieval village with a loser lord that faces drought and famine in the chronicled year. The main MC is Marek, a disabled bastard son of a shepherd that unwittingly gets caught up in palace politics. I 💜 the blind 100 year old healer. These are characters I won‘t soon forget!

squirrelbrain Wow! That‘s some review… stacked! 2y
Cinfhen Do u think this would work well in audio format?? 2y

Megabooks @Cinfhen I have read all of her other books on audio, and they have worked great, but Moshfegh herself narrates the audiobook, and you know how I feel about authors narrating their own fiction. #RunOnSentence! 🤣 anyway, I couldn‘t preview it, so I preordered the print instead of audio. Her stories generally lend themselves well to audio, though. 2y
Cinfhen I‘ll give it a try on audio, thanks♥️ 2y
BarbaraBB Medieval? I‘m thinking immediately of this one, that you loved and I didn‘t 2y
sarahbarnes This just came in for me at the library! Can‘t wait to read it. Great review! 2y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB you may hate me, but I‘m not sure Matrix was a good book to read in translation because so much of it was about showcasing Groff‘s writing style. Matrix had very little plot. Lapvona definitely has more plot and has that special weirdness that Moshfegh brings to a book. Everyone in her world is slightly askew. Both are excellent but I saw a lot of differences. I‘m not sure if you will, but I know you and I both dig weird so maybe?? 2y
Megabooks @sarahbarnes enjoy!! 👍🏻👍🏻💜 2y
BarbaraBB You can surely be right about the translation (which I almost never do so, why did I just that time?) and I definitely will read this one! 😘 2y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I‘m putting the Kawakami short story in the mail to you next time I go to the post office. 💜 I think you‘ll love it! it is small and will fit in a greeting card, but I‘ll have to see about an additional stamp or two. Anyway, expect that at some point in July. 😘 2y
BarbaraBB That is so kind, thank you so much!! 😘😘 2y
britt_brooke I have this in print and on audio, but haven‘t started it yet. Maybe this weekend! I love her books, and your review has me even more excited to get to it. 2y
Megabooks @britt_brooke I almost tagged you because I remember you liking some of her other books. I hope you enjoy this! It is very different than anything else she‘s done to date. 👍🏻 2y
vivastory I can't wait to read this one! So many wonderful new releases!! 2y
Megabooks @vivastory I loved this one because it‘s just so different. She has a way with outcasts! 2y
Centique I‘m so excited for this one! 2y

Luka and the Fire of Life | Salman Rushdie

‘There was once, in the city of Kahani, in the land of Alifbay, a boy named Luka who had two pets, a bear named Dog and a dog named Bear, which meant that whenever he called out, “Dog!” the bear waddled up amiably on his hind legs, and when he shouted, “Bear!” the dog bounded toward him, wagging his tail.‘ #FirstLineFridays @ShyBookOwl #RunOnSentence

I really expected to dislike this book after everything I‘ve heard and read about her political views and brand of feminism, but 29% in, its pretty damn entertaining, which is what I need now. #runonsentence #happyplace #ilovelitsy #litsyloveslibraries #hashtagcrazy 😜😊😊😊😊

Coleen_Nieto This was my cousins pick for our annual book swap! I'll have to move it up on the TBR list :) 6y
Megabooks @Coleen_Nieto Yes! I‘m really enjoying it. 6y
readordierachel Her feminism can be problematic, but she is an excellent writer. 6y

Megabooks @ReadOrDieRachel Agreed on both counts 6y
Mrs_Organized_Chaos I tried to read How To Be A Woman and just couldn‘t get very far into it. I decided to put it aside and try the audiobook hoping that I will enjoy it more that way. I have this on my TBR list but after trying her last book, I decided to hold off. 6y
Megabooks @Mrs_Organized_Chaos I haven‘t read HTBaW and probably won‘t because it‘s only an ePub at my library. I have read a lot more negative things about that one than Moranifesto. 6y
