The Comic Book Story of Video Games
The Comic Book Story of Video Games: The Incredible History of the Electronic Gaming Revolution | Jonathan Hennessey, Jack Mcgowan
11 posts | 7 read | 19 to read
A complete, illustrated history of video games--highlighting the machines, games, and people who have made gaming a worldwide, billion dollar industry/artform--told in a graphic novel format. Author Jonathan Hennessey and illustrator Jack McGowan present the first full-color, chronological origin story for this hugely successful, omnipresent artform and business. Hennessey provides readers with everything they need to know about video games--from their early beginnings during World War II to the emergence of arcade games in the 1970s to the rise of Nintendo to today's app-based games like Angry Birds and Pokemon Go. Hennessey and McGowan also analyze the evolution of gaming as an artform and its impact on society. Each chapter features spotlights on major players in the development of games and gaming that contains everything that gamers and non-gamers alike need to understand and appreciate this incredible phenomenon.

I really enjoyed this. I am pretty familiar with video game history from the 90s on, but this definitely helped fill in the gaps. It also brought out connections I wasn't aware of between original games and games of today. Finished with my snuggle buddy. She's still learning it's ok to be a lap cat.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa So sweet, and she‘s learning! 3y
MoMogrl @Riveted_Reader_Melissa she is. She showed up on our deck about a year and a half ago. We figured out she was dumped outside when her previous owners moved. She was always sweet, but we could tell wasn't allowed to be a cat with her previous owners. (we also suspect she was abused) Watching her learn how to be a cat and that it's ok to snuggle has been so rewarding. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @MoMogrl I‘m so glad she found a safe warm home with you. Breaks my heart when people treat their pets poorly. 3y

This reference made me laugh. Of course in 2017 the authors had no way of knowing Cyberpunk was going to be a glitchy mess.

So 2020 has been a year. (for everyone) Between most of my reading being for a certification for work, having to say goodbye to one of our kitties, and working crazy hours I have not had time or desire for pleasure reading for a long time. After hubby and I built a Lego tie fighter this morning taking the rest of the day to relax and read. Finished one I started earlier this year. Starting this one now. Is my nerdiness showing?

Librariana Hooray to nerdiness!! 🥳 3y

This was interesting but I felt like it was a little unfocused. It's good if you want a very generalized overview of how video games started. I would recommend reading the book about Nintendo instead

The Oregon Trail! Who doesn‘t love the Oregon Trail?! I still love and have fond memories of this game.

I enjoyed this book. I found the information was fascinating, and told in an entertaining fashion. I preferred the layout of the first half of the book, which I felt was more detailed and better layed out then the second half. All in all it was a really quick read with an overview of the history of gaming!

Kaylamburson Haha the Oregon Trail was the best. I felt like I never got to enjoy it though because al my classmates hogged it at school lol 6y
No_One I loved that game! You can play it online now. I bought the book “The Oregon Trail” because of my love of the game and my love of “Little House On The Prairie”. A few years ago a couple of guys (brothers?) rode the trail on horseback. It‘s on my TBR list. 6y
No_One Oh, duh, not on horseback..... they took a covered wagon and a team of mules. Just like the game. And real life back in the day. 🙂 6y

Heretherebedragons I loved this game too! Never once made it all the way to the Oregon coast, though. 6y
Bklover Used to play this with my kids! I learned not to name the characters after ourselves because every time a character would die my youngest would cry inconsolably ! 6y
TheNextBook @Kaylamburson The hubs downloaded it and I played and actually made it to Oregon! I was way too pleased with myself! 😂 6y
TheNextBook @No_One I read that buck and I thought it was really good! Mind you I would never ever try it in real life but the author was hilarious and I appreciated him doing it! 6y
TheNextBook @Heretherebedragons I finally did as an adult! Before then I never did! 6y
TheNextBook @Bklover Oh no! Poor thing! Yeah Nonsense names are best! 6y
Kaylamburson That is quite an accomplishment, @thenextbook!! Perhaps I need to download it and relive my childhood haha 6y
No_One @TheNextBook I heard it was funny! I‘m looking forward to it. 🙂 6y

I picked this on a whim from Blogging for Books to review. I‘m not a huge gamer but I‘ve definitely played throughout my life. I started reading this book this morning and it is highly entertaining and informative! Hennessey and McGowan are doing a great job relaying the information, keeping the history and the times in mind while still making it light and fun!

tricours Hmm, perhaps I should get my bf this for Christmas... 6y
hermyknee @Aloisi_tribe this post made me think of you! 6y
Betty This is a MUST buy for my son ... and I know his son will relish it too. 6y

Aloisi_tribe @hermyknee this looks great! Thanks! 6y
TheNextBook @tricours I‘m enjoying it. And I am not in any shape way or form a video game guru, so a lot of this information is new for me. But the author and illustrator are doing a great job, to me, of presenting the information without being overwhelming or boring. I am having fun! 6y
TheNextBook @Betty My kid has been wanting to get his hands on it since I got it in the mail! 😂 6y
TheNextBook @Aloisi_tribe I hope you get your hands on this. So far its good! 6y

The artwork wasn't my favorite, but definitely an interesting and informative read! There's a lot of name drops and terms that unless you know a little bit about computers/video games already, you're going to have to look up. Lots and lots of world history in this, which was cool and gave insight into the how's and why's of the industry's incredible growth.

The tagged book I have on hold and I'm first in line - so excited to get it!

But other than reading/books/writing, my favorite thing is video games. My favorite game, right now is pictured, but Skyrim is pretty fun, too. I wish I had a PC again so I could play Sims 😩

Congrats on your #litsyversary @DebinHawaii !!! And I hope for many more 😄

#giveaway #debsstack

EchoLogical I love the Sims but they started to get really glitchy. 7y
night_shift @EchoLogical that's why you play older version with mods :) 7y
DebinHawaii Awesome favorites! 👍👍😀 Thanks for the Litsyversary greetings and thanks for playing along! 📚❤️ 7y

night_shift @DebinHawaii I think so! :) yeah, absolutely! It's fun looking through all the other entries :) 7y
WarpedSweetness I love Fallout 4! So does my fiancee. We really miss our PS4. 7y
night_shift @WarpedSweetness my husband gets bored of it quickly, but I could play all day! What happened to your PS4?? We couldn't function without ours.. 7y
WarpedSweetness @UnidragonFrag We don't get bored of it. My fiancee is super picky with games normally, but he loves the Fallout series. Ugh, it broke before we left PA. We didn't bother replacing at the time, because our money was tied up in the move. So we have been have been using the PS3. 7y
night_shift Ah, mine doesn't really like the storylines, just likes to kill stuff (or build stuff depending on the mood). I like most games so long as they have a somewhat open world feel. Ahh, dang. That sucks about it breaking, but I can understand the $. We moved cross-country almost a year ago now and still feeling that. 7y
GypsyKat I have played Skyrim through so many times I lost count, and I LOVED Fallout 4! I absolutely loved that they added settlements for this one. I have way too much fun building them. 😆🎮 And there is a Sims Freeplay app that you can play on your phone or tablet. It's a light version of Sims. 7y
night_shift @GypsyKat I actually haven't beaten the main storyline on either games because I get to distracted with everything else. The settlements make me crazy 😵 always getting attacked at inopportune moments! Yeah, I know about the freeplay Sims, but I don't really care for it *shrug* thanks though! 7y
WarpedSweetness @UnidragonFrag We both like the storyline and the side quests and killing stuff. Lol I haven't played Skyrim, but my fiancee loves it. I just like to watch. I differ greatly on my games. I just moved cross-country too, and my Jeep keeps breaking. So it seems like I never have money at the moment. :-( 7y
night_shift @WarpedSweetness You play any other sort of games? I also have a DS and love Pokemon. The storylines are kinda lame, though they've gotten better since red/yellow/blue, but mostly it appeases my need to collect stuff. I can't watch people play. Makes me crazy haha .. that sucks about your Jeep. I don't know what we'd do if ours broke 😨 7y
WarpedSweetness @UnidragonFrag I love Pokemon!! I play all kinds, though I really like roleplaying games. Final Fantasy are some of my favourite. I absolutely love the God of War games. And Zelda!!! I want to buy a Wii system now for Breath of the Wild. I had a DSi, but I let my daughter have it as I didn't have time to play it, and I've regretted that decision ever since. Lol And yeah it does. :-/ My Jeep has become a money pit. 7y
night_shift @WarpedSweetness so nice to meet someone who also likes pokemon! Final fantasy is fun, but I like the tactic ones on DS best! I also dig Dragon Age, Far Cry, GTO, others. We bought a Wii for the kiddo last xmas but it's too old for Breath of the Wild, sadly :( really want to play it! 7y
WarpedSweetness @UnidragonFrag I do love Pokemon. I used to play the card game way back in the day too. I'm not a big fan of Pokemon Go. I don't care much for the Tatic ones, I like the roleplaying ones. We like Far Cry and GTO also, though I tend to more watch my fiancee play them than really play myself. I had a Wii for Twilight Princess, then when I had beaten everything I sold it. Now I want it again. 7y
night_shift @WarpedSweetness I used to collect the cards, but I only played Yu-Gi-Oh! Pokemon Go was extremely short lived for me. It got really glitchy after the third or so update took out features I liked, so I stopped playing. We have Twilight Princess too! It's pretty fun, but Mostly our Wii is got kid games and group games. 7y
WarpedSweetness I did not play Yu-Gi-Oh, just watched the show. I used to play Magic The Gathering. That's how I felt about Pokemon Go also. I think we definitely need to get a Wii again. Though my family doesn't really do group games. I am not competitive at all, my middle child is too sensitive and my fiancee, oldest daughter and son are super competitive. Lol That would be disaster. 7y
night_shift @WarpedSweetness I didn't like the yu-gi-oh show, weirdly. Never played Magic, but it looks interesting. I get super competitive with video games, but husband isn't so much and our kiddo just likes to play. So those game nights are super fun 😂 7y
WarpedSweetness My oldest daughter and my fiancee will insult each other when they start getting competitive. And my son is just barely two and tries to get in on it. So I find it funny, those two are super into it and try to beat each other. Lmao We tried playing Sorry! Together once. Oh my goodness. 7y
night_shift @WarpedSweetness haha.. that sounds great, actually 😂 we have Operation and it's like one of the only games my kiddo is actually really good at. And she rubs it in our face, but like.. it's all too small for fat adult fingers 😆 7y
WarpedSweetness @UnidragonFrag I'm terrible at Operation! My only consolation is that my oldest sucks at it too! Lol She won't play anymore with us. 7y

Since my boyfriend and I actively changed our pet status from "one day" to "actively looking", most of my free time is spent trawling through PetRescue and the RSPCA looking for the perfect pooch to complete our trio.
We're driving to a few shelters in Thursday so I'm allowing myself to halt the search this morning for books and brownies ?
