Dreamers of the Day
Dreamers of the Day: A Novel | Mary Doria Russell
15 posts | 14 read | 13 to read
I suppose I ought to warn you at the outset that my present circumstances are puzzling, even to me. Nevertheless, I am sure of this much: My little story has become your history. You wont really understand your times until you understand mine. So begins the account of Agnes Shanklin, the charmingly diffident narrator of Mary Doria Russells compelling new novel, Dreamers of the Day. And what is Miss Shanklins little story? Nothing less than the creation of the modern Middle East at the 1921 Cairo Peace Conference, where Winston Churchill, T. E. Lawrence, and Lady Gertrude Bell met to decide the fate of the Arab worldand of our own. A forty-year-old schoolteacher from Ohio still reeling from the tragedies of the Great War and the influenza epidemic, Agnes has come into a modest inheritance that allows her to take the trip of a lifetime to Egypt and the Holy Land. Arriving at the Semiramis Hotel just as the Peace Conference convenes, Agnes, with her plainspoken American opinionsand a small, noisy dachshund named Rosieenters into the company of the historic luminaries who will, in the space of a few days at a hotel in Cairo, invent the nations of Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, and Jordan. Neither a pawn nor a participant at the conference, Agnes is ostensibly insignificant, and that makes her a welcome sounding board for Churchill, Lawrence, and Bell. It also makes her unexpectedly attractive to the charismatic German spy Karl Weilbacher. As Agnes observes the tumultuous inner workings of nation-building, she is drawn more and more deeply into geopolitical intrigue and toward a personal awakening. With prose as graceful and effortless as a seductive float down the Nile, Mary Doria Russell illuminates the long, rich history of the Middle East with a story that brilliantly elucidates todays headlines. As enlightening as it is entertaining, Dreamers of the Day is a memorable, passionate, gorgeously written novel. From the Hardcover edition.

Aimeesue @jlhammar Strangely thrilling, right? I have a lot of signed books, but this is the first hand painted author art I‘ve received. 🎨 (edited) 11mo
Aimeesue @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I love The little dog above her signature too ❤️ 11mo
vivastory I hope to read The Sparrow at some point in the not too distant future 11mo
Aimeesue @vivastory That was the first of her books I read. I liked it a lot, but that was YEARS ago. I wonder if it holds up? I should give it a reread at some point. I think of that book almost every time I open a new can of coffee! 😄 (edited) 11mo

This was my #bookspin book for May. Yay! So happy to have completed a #bookspin and #doublespin!
This was a compelling story and well-written and researched, but the history background felt forced not quite there at the same time. I picked this book to learn something about this era in history when the maps of the modern middle east were drawn, but I don't feel like I really did learn anything about the players or what was going on. ⬇

DrexEdit The author did evoke a feeling of the time really well. I was able to imagine being in early 20th century Egypt and Gaza. But the story was only framed by the historical events going on around, not about those events. So I still want to read more about this time period. It felt eerily prescient with the discussion of the creation of Israel and the aftermath of the last flu-like pandemic.
In all, an enjoyable read, so it's a pick for me!

All right Wheel of Bookish Fate! May #Bookspin is on! I will definitely read both because #18 is a lovely picture book. 😊

Dreamers of the Day is about the creation of the modern day map of the middle east, a period in history I know almost nothing about. So I'm looking forward to that!

This got picked up because of my interest in Gertrude Bell but also because the author wrote one of my favorite books from a few years ago on Doc Holiday. - In this book our MC finds herself at the crux of history. Crossing paths with Winston Churchill, Gertrude Bell, and T.E. Lawrence, this is set during the 1921 Cairo Peace Conference; a very real event that shaped the modern day Middle East and has impacted the world since. Highly recommended!

This is set during a time and location where I should be more familiar with. Most of this takes place post WWI, starting with the great influenza and then moving over to Egypt and the Middle East during the Cairo Peace Conference. The real historic figures who appear and how the Middle East was divided was interesting and especially relevant to today's world. Even a poor plot twist in the last chapter didn't mar my enjoyment.

Loved this read. WW1 and the influenza outbreak is fascinating to me, as is Egyptian culture and politics during the late 19th/early 29th century. Add in an engaging older female character full of growth and development, a feisty dog, and the effective use of historical characters, and I am totally in!

A midwestern school teacher inherits some money and decides to take a trip to Egypt. She becomes a witness to the post WWI division of the Arab colonies by Churchill. Lawrence of Arabia becomes her friend. I liked the book but disliked the ending, the narrator at times was too omniscient. Enjoyed the book up to the final two chapters

Currently racing through because it's on loan from the library. Listening to the audio book of Tuchman's The Proud Tower concurrently and finding the two make good companions.

On the ferry today, traveling with Dreamers of the Day. @rebeccaschinsky was talking about The Sparrow on her All The Books Podcast but unfortunately I don't have a copy. Remembered I had another book by the same author so giving it a try

My first Mary Doria Russell is also her lowest rated on GoodReads. If this is her 'worst,' I'm excited for more Russell!

tracyrowanreads She's quite versatile, but this book is less emotionally driven than politically, and I think that fails to resonate with a lot of readers who want another "Sparrow." 8y
