Turning her back on her privileged life in Victorian England, Gertrude Bell (1868-1926), fired by her innate curiosity, journeyed the world and became fascinated with all things Arab. Traveling the length and breadth of the Arab region, armed with a love for its language and its people, she not only produced several enormously popular books based on her experiences but became instrumental to the British foreign office. When World War I erupted, and the British needed the loyalty of the Arab leaders, it was Gertrude Bell's work and connections that helped provided the brain for T. E. Lawrence's military brawn. After the war she participated in both the Paris and Cairo conferences, played a major role in creating the modern Middle East, and was generally considered the most powerful woman in the British Empire. In this incident-packed biography, Janet Wallach reveals a woman whose achievements and independent spirit were especially remarkable for her times, and who brought the same passion and intensity to her explorations as she did to her rich romantic life. Too long eclipsed by Lawrence's fame, Gertrude Bell emerges in this first major biography as a woman whose accomplishments rank as crucial to world history (especially in light of the continuing geopolitical importance of the Middle East) and whose life was a grand adventure.

This is a good one. #TrivialThursday

1. Stephen King
2. Grateful Dead
3. Diet Peach Snapple

@GarthRanzz

GarthRanzz Good choice, one and all. As long as the Snapple is in the old glass bottles. I hate the new, plastic ones. 6y
AmyG @GarthRanzz Only in glass. And as for the Grateful Dead...it would be whoever is still alive. ;) (edited) 6y
GarthRanzz It‘s The Dead. They can live up to their name. Especially since I didn‘t specify real or recordings. 😊 6y

Kaye Is there any need for the diet drink ? You‘re the only female on an island with all men. They won‘t mind an extra pound or two. You might wanna bring a hatchet or buck knife for protection. @AmyG 6y
AmyG @Kaye Ha! I love Diet Peach Snapple...not too sugary. And these are OLD men. I‘m not too worried. ;) 6y
Kaye There‘s a little fix for that old disorder. V.I.A.G.R.A. bring the knife @AmyG (edited) 6y
AmyG @Kaye Have you seen any of the Grateful Dead these days? I love their music...but...I‘d throw the viagra into the ocean. No thanks. Does George Clooney sing? 6y
Kaye No. I‘d have to look up a photo of them. I don‘t think George sings. Probably doesn‘t have 2 brain cells to rub together. Men that look that good usually don‘t have anything else worthwhile. He‘d be nice to look at though. @AmyG 6y
AmyG @Kaye That‘s the idea. Just looking. ;) 6y
Tex2Flo 1. Greg Iles because he could tell a good story and be resourceful toward surviving. 2. Lyle Lovett, another great storyteller and a Texan. 3. Wine...just wine. 6y
AmyG @Tex Greg Iles is ine writer I can‘t wait to read. Natchez Burning is coung in the mail. 6y
