'A book that every parent will need to keep by their bedside, especially at the weekend, so they can be fully reassured that their young daughters are having a truly good time' - Colm Tibn Hot Little Hands immerses us in the world of eight young women at a time when the line between adolescence and adulthood blurs, and life can be thrilling and unnerving all at once. These are stories about break-ups that last longer than relationships; about sexual encounters, both real and imagined; about stumbling on the fringes of innocence and the marks desire can leave. About a desperate longing for maturity - and what happens when you finally attain it. In this wry and exhilarating debut, Abigail Ulman takes a disquieting look at the excruciating cruelties and surprising power of being a young woman.

This book was fantastic. Every story resonated and shocked. I was skeptical when I began but after the first one I was committed. And it's a really fast read. It's not short, but the stories move quickly. There's not a lot of extra unnecessary fluff details. The stories progress at a really nice pace.

Takes me straight back to freshman year at college. 💜💜🎶🎶 Thanks #hoopla!! #musicalreading #wintereread

Matilda Yes! I made a friend who wasn't a fan go to their concert with me and to this day she calls them the barenaked shits I made her see 😂 7y
Megabooks @Matilda 😂😂😂 7y
ReadingEnvy Oh my gosh I loved this band before Stephen left it. I've seen them three times live, and once was the Stunt tour during college. 7y

Megabooks @ReadingEnvy I've never seen them live, but I stopped listening in the early 2000s, but I still like their old stuff! 7y
ReadingEnvy @Ebooksandcooks Did you hear their holiday album? Worth it for the We Three Kings (feat. Sarah McLachlan) and Elf's Lament (feat. Michael Buble before all the fame!) 7y
Megabooks @ReadingEnvy no! I'll have to check it out! 7y

I'm not much of a short story reader, but this year I've added a few to my reading diet to round me out. This was an awesome collection of stories about "girls" and "young women" encountering various identity issues. I was really impressed and would highly recommend.

Book 4 of the #biblioweekend! Surprise surprise, I liked another collection of short stories 🙃 But seriously, this was really good and I'm already in the bag for whatever Abigail Ulman does next.

These were all about young women growing up at various points in their teens and twenties. My favorites were the three stories that followed Claire, as well as the story about horse camp.

Megabooks I loved the horse camp story. It's really stuck in my head. 8y
Megabooks Also, I felt really bad about Claire getting deported and bed bugs, but I didn't connect with any of her others. 8y
Sfox414 @Ebooksandcooks omg the deportation one was horrifying (although not as much as the gymnast one). I liked Claire a lot--there was this line in her second story about how she mostly stayed at her boyfriend's place because her room was too messy, and that's where her character really clicked for me. 8y
Megabooks Yes, the gymnast one was horrifying!! 😞😞 8y

4🌟 Overall a strong collection that spans the globe from Russia to Australia to the US following girls and women as they come of age sexually. The arc of three stories about the British film student in SF was decent, but not the one I would have chosen to expand. My favorite was about two Australian teens who turn their backs on parties & sex to go to horse camp at 16. The other great one is a 22 yo New Yorker who gets pregnant w a gay friend.

This story broke my heart. 😭😭😭 I'd ugly cry if I could tonight. Why is in a spoiler tag.

Megabooks 4 teenage Russian gymnasts are sold into sexual slavery in America. This is something I feel very strongly about, and my heart shatters every time I hear about girls, even fictional ones. 8y
[DELETED] 1409720085 Such a difficult thing to read about but so important. 8y
AWahle Not sure now is a good time to read this one. My baby girl leaves for college in a month and I can't protect her from heartbreak... 8y
Megabooks @AWahle Probably not. And I'm sorry you can't protect her. A mother's love is amazing! Sounds like she's lucky to have an excellent one 😃👍🏻 8y

I'm going to try this one again. I got tired of short stories after reading six collections in a row! If not, I'm still in the middle of This One Is Mine, but the characters in that book are becoming more unpleasant than I want to deal with now. I really want to start Grunt, but I'm saving it for a little longer if I can. #bookishproblems #bookwormproblems

Hazel0303 Always love to hear what you have on your TBR! 8y
Megabooks Thanks @Hazel0303 This one seems to be working out! 8y
Matilda I really enjoyed this one and all the female characters. 8y

I'm going to need to marinate on How to Set a Fire for a bit before I write a review. It's a pretty damn incredible book. Solid 4🌟

Anyway, I'm starting this now. I hope I haven't made myself too sick of short stories by reading 6 in a row! I ❤️ coming of age, though, but I hate the cover!

I got this through LibraryThing early review program. I liked this book - it was a quick read and I enjoyed Claire's story the most, maybe because I love San Francisco and the story took me there. The Elise and Jenni story was great too.

Mehso-so

Got this as an ARC from LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program. Didn't realize it was a collection of short stories. Lots of girls making unhealthy life decisions. Well written, but so very sad and, like stories can be, unsatisfying to end without resolutions.

I never used to like short stories but in the past year or so I've grown more of an appreciation of them. Maybe because it's such a tricky format to master or maybe because I love the way the ending hangs in the air. Either way, I'm very excited to start this.

These nine stories about young women in a rush to be adults are achingly sad and smart. More, please.

Two stories in and really enjoying this collection about the lives of young women. I usually have a hard time getting into short story volumes, but so far I love this book.
