A good but not great book about a woman‘s experiences in Bhutan. #ReadingAsia2021

Memoirs and travelogues are not my thing. However, I really enjoyed this look at the religion, government, and daily life of the people of Bhutan. I would have preferred a little less of Lisa‘s personal history/backstory, and I‘ll put a CW in the comments, but overall I‘d definitely recommend this for #readingasia2021 #bhutan

DGRachel CW for rape - the author briefly described an incident that happened before she married and before she went to Bhutan. It comes out of nowhere, though, and its impact on her life pops up periodically. 3y
Librarybelle I like travelogues and books like this…stacking! 😁 3y

Between a pick and a so-so. A memoir of the author as she uproots her life to help out with a Bhutan radio station. She then starts to make more regular trips to the country to help out other endeavors and meet friends. She was there during the handover from #Bhutan being a monarchy to a democracy.
👇

Smarkies It was a good general introduction to Bhutan - in terms of history and some culture and economics. However, there was something that was missing that would have made it a must read.

I heard the author speak this past week and she was wonderful. She approaches life with an openness and curiosity I appreciate.

LeeRHarry I really want to go to Bhutan - think it would be fascinating 😊 7y

Needed a travel or adventure book to take me away for a bit. A trip to Bhutan sounds perfect!

This book was a pick for my book club, and I hadn't heard of it until they announced it. It's always interesting to learn about the cultures of other countries, how simple life can be, and how the people are happy and survive on so little. If your looking for nonfiction quick read, this is a good choice.

#FunFridayPhoto - Favorite Memoir: I love reading about countries with which I'm not familiar. Napoli's story of how she ended up leaving her life in America to go help a start-up radio station in Bhutan was absolutely fascinating! (TW for sexual assault because she describes the rape she went through earlier in her life).

mllemay Also honorable mention to the memoir I'm reading now - Names for the Sea: Strangers in Iceland by Sarah Moss. Less than 100 pages left and I found it fascinating as well!! 7y
Leelee08 I loved this book! And thanks for the other recommendation....I'm gonna buy it now!😊 7y
mllemay @Leelee08 yay! I just love accounts of people getting completely immersed in another culture ☺️ 7y
Leelee08 Me too! That's one of my favorite things to read about😊 7y

"Everything is always in a state of flux. Nothing lasts forever--not triumph, love, no happy feeling, no state of sadness. Clinging to a person or place or moment in time was futile and unwise and led to suffering; so did wanting things to be different..."
