Spider Network: The Wild Story of a Math Genius, a Gang of Backstabbing Bankers, and One of the Greatest Scams in Financial History
Spider Network: The Wild Story of a Math Genius, a Gang of Backstabbing Bankers, and One of the Greatest Scams in Financial History | David Enrich
The Wall Street Journal's award-winning business reporter unveils the bizarre and sinister story of how a math genius named Tom Hayes, a handful of outrageous confederates, and a deeply corrupt banking system ignited one of the greatest financial scandals in history. In 2006, an oddball group of bankers, traders and brokers from some of the world's largest financial institutions made a startling realization: Libor--the London interbank offered rate, which determines the interest rates on trillions in loans worldwide--was set daily by a small group of easily manipulated functionaries, and that they could reap huge profits by nudging it to suit their trading portfolios. Tom Hayes, a brilliant but troubled mathematician, became the lynchpin of a wild alliance that among others included a French trader nicknamed -Gollum-; the broker -Abbo, - who liked to publicly strip naked when drinking; a Kazakh chicken farmer turned something short of financial whiz kid; a broker known as -Village- (short for -Village Idiot-) and fascinated with human-animal sex; an executive called -Clumpy- because of his patchwork hair loss; and a broker uncreatively nicknamed -Big Nose.- Eventually known as the -Spider Network, - Hayes's circle generated untold riches --until it all unraveled in spectacularly vicious, backstabbing fashion. The Spider Network is not only a rollicking account of the scam, but a provocative examination of a financial system that was crooked throughout, designed to promote envelope-pushing behavior while shielding higher-ups from the consequences of their subordinates' rapacious actions.

This #Conspiracy #audiobook has been in my #TBR forever. Generally I enjoy conspiracies and true crime, but I don‘t usually listen to audiobooks this long. Has anyone read/listened to it?

#StarTrekSummerMay

PS This is one of the better Beverly Crusher episodes, IMO. ***See below 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

Megabooks Okay, I just realized I got Conspiracy confused with Suspicions! Whoops! Thanks for straightening me out @tournevis ! 5y

While I don‘t regret reading this book about how the stock market was gamed by traders to make heaps of money, the number of characters involved and the level of detail David Enrich goes into made this book a slight slog!

Recommended for fans of offbeat true crime (i.e. about crimes that are not murder related). However, the dramatis personae at the start of the book rivals that of A Game of Thrones!

8little_paws I need a nonviolent true crime book for #readharder, thhis might do the trick! 5y
Pruzy @8little_paws I‘ve heard good things about The Feather Thief. I‘d definitely read it if I came across a copy. 5y
LauraBeth @8little_paws I second @Pruzy‘s recommendation of The Feather Thief. I haven‘t read it but everyone I know who has, has really enjoyed it and has recommended it. I‘ll be reading it for the nonviolent true crime prompt 😀 5y

8little_paws @LauraBeth I've heard that too but it doesn't sound very captivating to me! Then again, there have been plenty of books I started out skeptical of and ended up loving. 5y
Pruzy @LauraBeth Good to hear! 5y
Pruzy @8little_paws Then I think Spider Network might just be for you! Another true crime book, this time related to the tech industry, is Bad Blood by John Carryrou about the health biotech company Theranos. Unfortunately, I didn‘t finish this one as I kept up with the story as it was happening so lot of it was not new to me, plus I had it on eBook which does not do it for me. But the writing was great! 5y
8little_paws @pruzy I listened to that one on audio and really liked it! I also own this book tagged, but was thinking I'd count it as my business book. I'm a cpa so it's about time I read this one!! 5y
Pruzy @8little_paws Seems like The Spider Network will be a good companion! 5y
8little_paws @Pruzy another thing I was thinking for nonviolent true crime was maybe something about the opioid epidemic, maybe something like 5y
8little_paws That also looks really good. Another book which i'm pretty sure is nonviolent is this one. I recall liberty hardy raved about it! 5y
Pruzy @8little_paws Must be good if @Liberty is raving about it! 5y
TheFunkyBookworm @Pruzy love your recommendations of The Feather Thief and Bad Blood- both were amazing! Check out this one for another great nonviolent true crime 5y
Pruzy @TheFunkyBookworm Going to add this one to my wish list ASAP! 5y

A captivating narrative, depicting the grind of personal and professional life of a trader, who was at the center of the biggest financial scam of our time.

I'm going to be getting the audiobook of this story about how the Libor was manipulated in 2006 for the benefit of a small group of international bankers and traders. Sounds fascinating! #CustomHouse #WilliamMorrow
