Another great Carl Morck story, in which Carl + his 2 colleagues Assad + Rose investigate several disappearances in 1987 , while in present day the search focuses on a far right party moving into power. Thus is a very enjoyable series set in Denmark which combines great plotting with a brilliant sense of humour.

1950 Denmark Nete Hermansen was sterilized by Dr. Curt Wad. Det. Carl Morck is presented with the case of women who went missing in the 80's. The novel brings to the forefront the forced sterilization of women in Denmark's recent history also the rise of a fascist political party. It is a top-notch thriller with lots of suspense from the beginning until the very end. I‘m looking forward to reading the next book in the series. Highly recommended!

The topic is loathsome. Forced sterilization. It is a sign of good writing if the reader experiences anger and I did. I was full of rage. I know there are still people who think certain classes should not have children and thank goodness I don't personally know one.

The ending was really unique. I'll be thinking of the ending for a long time.

AnneCecilie I think it‘s getting better for each book and I enjoyed the first book. The fourth book went be really fast for me. 4y

EadieB Yes! Each book is getting better and better. I just wish some of the books were not so long. 4y

Butterfinger @AnneCecilie @EadieB that ending. Whoa! Chilling, yet I couldn't help chuckling (just a small bit because I was just so mad) because two elderly people were trying to murder each other. You just don't see that happening often. I hope this doesn't offend anyone. 4y

Butterfinger My mind is still consumed by the ending. Yes I liked the book. Hated the topic. I look forward to reading Department Q books. I like the three main characters and even the supporting ones - ex-wife, roommates, etc. 4y

AnneCecilie I thought that was horrible and the party and its doctors had me looking like this 🤬🤬🤬🤬 It infuriates me when anyone tries to decide over a woman and make decisions for her. So this, when the women don‘t even know 🤬🤬🤬🤬 4y

EadieB Wad and his Purity-Party certainly over-stepped the rights of these women. 4y

Butterfinger @AnneCecilie @EadieB I totally agree. The discrimination of Nete's teacher, doctor's abuse of power - it just made me want to fight someone. How can people allow this? North Carolina has its own history of forced sterilization. 4y

Marina_h I think it's frightening that some people think like that because I'm sure there are still people who believe these sort of things. And I'm a little curious to find out if there's any truth to the story about the island the women where sent to do I might have to look that up 4y

AnneCecilie I didn‘t think much about. Maybe because I finished the book before most of the craziness in real life started 4y

EadieB I felt like I could certainly identify with what is going on. 4y

Butterfinger Thank goodness it was just in the beginning, but I didn't like how he went to his girlfriend's house. Didn't he care about infecting her? And he was around Hardy? Unexcusable. 4y

Marina_h I didn't think too much about that. I didn't compare it to the world today, maybe because I just try not to think about that all the time 4y

AnneCecilie Some sort of police, intelligence, secret services. Something with interrogations and where keeping your cool is important 4y

EadieB I think Assad has been a sort of secret agent in the military in whichever country he came from. 4y

Butterfinger I love Assad. I want his backstory. I think he did something that would shame Denmark if it ever came to light. 4y

Butterfinger For Denmark to be able to immigrate and the other Arab knows what it is. 4y

AnneCecilie In the first book, I didn‘t like him. But the more I read about him, the more he grows on me. He‘s letting his ex-wife‘s son stay with him, Hardy is staying with him, he found Assad a map of the building so he could pray in the right direction. So he‘s not the a$$ I thought him to be. 4y

EadieB I didn't like Carl too much in the beginning but the more we get to know him, we are getting to see his more gentler side and I like him a lot more. 4y

Butterfinger @AnneCecilie @EadieB this book made me like Carl a bit more. He cares for Rose and Assad. I want to know who is trying to set him up. 4y

Marina_h I've liked Carl from the beginning. Yes he seems a bit annoying at times but I think he also shows a lot of good qualities. 4y

AnneCecilie I think that there‘s probably something there to be revealed in later books. It‘s weird that Rose‘s different personas are her real sisters. What have happened in that family for them to exclude Rose? 4y

EadieB There definitely is something mysterious going on with Rose's personality almost as if she has multiple personalities going on inside of her. (edited) 4y

Another English title is: Guilt

The 4th book about Department Q and there‘s action from the beginning and all to the very end. I was so engrossed in the story so when my audio said I was at 95%, I was shocked. I thought it was more left.

The cold case this time centres around some missing persons from 1987.

And some of the men in this story made me go 😡😡😡

EadieB @Crazeedi I usually save the manila envelopes that my books come in and reuse them when I send books to other people. I just tape over the old addresses and they are fine to go out to someone else. Always use media mail and mark the envelope as it is cheaper postage. $2.75 for a paperback and $3.27 for hardback. Not bad because you get a credit to get a book from someone else. 4y

EadieB @gradcat @Crazeedi There is another site I use too, Bookmooch.com but I l prefer paperbackswap.com. Bookmooch.com does not seem to have as many of the books I like and it has more foreign users. If you want a book from out of the US, then it will cost you 3 credits but the person has to be willing to send it to you. I post most of my books on paperbackswap but after they have been listed for over 1 or 2 years, then I moved them to bookmooch. 4y

EadieB @gradcat @Crazeedi Because bookmooch is lacking in some books, all the books that I post on bookmooch move pretty fast. I have over 800 credits on both sites. They also have wishlists so when you get to the top of the wishlists and someone posts the book, they notify you and you can accept the book or reject it. Oh forgot to mention that paperbackswap does charge $15.00/year to belong but bookmooch is free. It's still worth it as I get good books. (edited) 4y

Doing day 4 and 5 of #septemberboger because they were both difficult af. Day 4 was "yellow book" and day 5 was "Scandinavian authors". I'll be the first to admit I read disturbingly little European lit, much less Scandinavian (I am a horrible Dane ?) and genuinely spent five minutes trying to think of an author. So. ? Also, nope, haven't read this one. ?

okthislooksbad @tricours I don't doubt it, but back in 7-9th grade my Danish-teacher was obsessed with all the most obscure, awful stuff, and it completely turned me off Danish literature. If I could find something that wasn't crime novels I'd probably give it a shot, but until then I'm nope-ing out 🙁 7y

Thinking of reading this next. I enjoyed the others I've read in the series and crime novels are always a great way to spend a weekend! ( I hate that the American version have totally different titles! It takes ages to tag these books 😂 )

#24in48 spent cleaning up my bookshelves rather than reading. Oops! A tiny fraction sorted here. Many read, many not read and five to be given away (hand-me-downs I know I'll never read). Adler Jussi's Q novels are awesome though. They are keepers!
