The Way to London
The Way to London: A Novel | Alix Rickloff
7 posts | 4 read | 16 to read
From the author of Secrets of Nanreath Hall comes this gripping, beautifully written historical fiction novel set during World War IIthe unforgettable story of a young woman who must leave Singapore and forge a new life in England. On the eve of Pearl Harbor, impetuous and overindulged, Lucy Stanhope, the granddaughter of an earl, is living a life of pampered luxury in Singapore until one reckless act will change her life forever. Exiled to England to stay with an aunt she barely remembers, Lucy never dreamed that she would be one of the last people to escape Singapore before war engulfs the entire island, and that her parents would disappear in the devastating aftermath. Now grief stricken and all alone, she must cope with the realities of a grim, battle-weary England. Then she meets Bill, a young evacuee sent to the country to escape the Blitz, and in a moment of weakness, Lucy agrees to help him find his mother in London. The unlikely runaways take off on a seemingly simple journey across the country, but her world becomes even more complicated when she is reunited with an invalided soldier she knew in Singapore. Now Lucy will be forced to finally confront the choices she has made if she ever hopes to have the future she yearns for.

#JulyJourneys

Here are a dozen books I reviewed for book tours that are set (or mostly set) in #London. I grabbed the first 12 when I searched for London on my food blog, although there are many more & even more in books I‘ve read not for the blog & on my #TBR. London & the U.K. in general are high on the list of my favorite book settings. 💂🏻‍♀️🇬🇧

keithmalek My favorite London based novel is "A Long Way Down" by Nick Hornby. 3y

MayJasper Would you recommend any of them? @DebinHawaii 3y
DebinHawaii @keithmalek I need to read that one! 🤗 3y
DebinHawaii @MayJasper Yes, several of them but it depends on what you like to read—there‘s a mix of historical fiction, thriller, chick-lit & a cozy mystery so if any of those categories interest you, I can name my favorites. 3y

I really enjoyed following Lucy on her journey to London. What I didn‘t expect was this book to have some funny moments in it as well. I thought it was worth the read. It was nice to see a spoiled entitled brat become a caring individual, no matter how much she tries to go back to her selfish side. It‘s a great read give it a try!

If any week deserved a cocktail...😬🍸I finished this WWII coming of age story about a spoiled young woman sent away from Singapore just before the Japanese invasion for an indiscretion to the English countryside to live with her aunt. Lucy meets a young boy & helps him get to London to find his mother. Not too heavy, a good balance of humor, action & romance. With a classic Gin Rickey cocktail for my blog book tour review & recipe.📚🍸Link👇🏻

Day 21 #FallIntoBooks #setinfaveera I've posted about most of these books before but World War II era books are my definite favorites, especially when they have different perspectives as many of these nine do. I've read and enjoyed all but the center tagged book which is in my #TBR pile for an upcoming blog book tour review. 📚💜

JaclynW This is one of my favorite eras too. And I can't believe I haven't read ANY of the ones pictures here! MORE TBR!! 7y
Posemn Wow! These all look like they are right up my alley and I don't think I have read any of them. Gotta start stacking. Thanks @DebinHawaii! 7y
