Notes from the Internet Apocalypse
Notes from the Internet Apocalypse: A Novel | Wayne Gladstone
11 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
When the Internet suddenly stops working, society reels from the loss of flowing data and streaming entertainment. Addicts wander the streets talking to themselves in 140 characters or forcing cats to perform tricks for their amusement, while the truly desperate pin their requests for casual encounters on public bulletin boards. The economy tumbles and the government passes the draconian NET Recovery Act. For Gladstone, the Net's disappearance comes particularly hard, following the loss of his wife, leaving his flask of Jamesons and grandfather's fedora as the only comforts in his Brooklyn apartment. But there are rumors that someone in New York is still online. Someone set apart from this new world where Facebook flirters "poke" each other in real life and members of Anonymous trade memes at secret parties. Where a former librarian can sell information as a human search engine and the perverted fulfill their secret fetishes at the blossoming Rule 34 club. With the help of his friends---a blogger and a webcam girl, both now out of work---Gladstone sets off to find the Internet. But is he the right man to save humanity from this Apocalypse? For those of you wondering if you have WiFi right now, Wayne Gladstone's Notes from the Internet Apocalypse examines the question "What is life without the Web?"

“Losing the #Internet has forced them to interact verbally instead of microblogging their lives, but a lot of them still talk in Tweets:
"Ugh! I'm standing in line at the post office."
"I'm not eating the crusts on my sandwich because apparently I'm five.” #QuotsyAug20

Pretty great quote. He‘s talking about his experience in a museum but transfer that to a Library or bookstore and the same thing holds true.

No internet so I won't be active until Friday at the soonest

AmyG That actually sounds lovely. ;) 7y
bookslesstravelled @AmyG I have loads of books I need to read, so it's a nice break haha! 7y
Laura317 I would go into withdrawal without the internet. I get all cranky. Kinda like I do when I'm hungry. 7y
bookslesstravelled @Laura317 I spent a lot of time at the library haha 7y

Thanks to all the Littens who have mentioned to check the book section at the dollar store! I was there on other business today when I suddenly remembered that advice. After some digging around, I came away with these lovelies. $1 for book? Yes, please! #bookhaul

Librariana Which dollar store did you find these goodies at? I may need to go browse in my local ones! 7y
christineandbooks I've been to three different ones in my area and found one had a huge section of books, one had a medium sized section, and one a really small section. But in the medium sized section I found two awesome hardcovers in perfect condition. Definitely good place to check! 7y
christineandbooks @librariana See above comment... I forget to tag you... ☺ 7y

TheWordJar @librariana I found these at a Dollar Tree. Definitely worth a check in your area. @christineandbooks This one I would consider smaller, only two shelves, maybe three feet wide each. I had to dig for these. They shelved the books face out, so you had to move five or six books to get to the ones in the back. 7y
Reviewsbylola Prep is a great find! 7y
TheWordJar @Reviewsbylola I was really excited about that one. It has been on my TBR forever. 7y
Megabooks Nice! I need to go check out the books at Ollie's! 7y
Wife I'm hooked on #DollarTree books! Lots of good finds and I enjoy the hunt. I rearrange the whole section when I browse and I think the shelves look way better when I leave. 🤓 7y
LeahBergen Prep is good! 👍🏼 7y
TheWordJar @Wife I love that! I'm going to try that next time. Shelves were a mess! 7y
TheBookHippie @Wife I do the same thing 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 7y
TheWordJar @LeahBergen Looking forward to that one the most. I've wanted to read it for a long time now. 7y
monkeygirlsmama Score! I used to find great books for $1 at Dollar Tree all the time. 7y
monkeygirlsmama Out of those I've only read Prep, but I loved it. 7y

Mehso-so

I initially got this book because of its similarity to "John Dies at the End". It shared some of the same veins as "J.D.A.T.E", overall I was not as impressed. The satire did not come close &I just couldn't connect with the characters.

I did enjoy the concept/them though. What would happen if the internet disappeared? Would it throw our society in to some sort of dystopian spiral?

In conclusion, enjoyed the idea just not the execution of it.
