Sin: Selected Poems of Forugh Farrokhzad | Fur?gh Farrukhz?d, Sholeh Wolpι
20 posts | 3 read | 18 to read
For the first time, the work of Iranian poet Forugh Farrokhzad is being brought to English-speaking readers through the perspective of a translator who is a poet in her own right, fluent in both Persian and English and intimately familiar with each culture. Sin includes the entirety of Farrokhzad's last book, numerous selections from her fourth and most enduring book, Reborn, and selections from her earlier work and creates a collection that is true to the meaning, the intention, and the music of the original poems. Farrokhzad was the most significant female Iranian poet of the twentieth century, as revolutionary as Russia's Akhmatova and Tsvetaeva and America's Plath and Sexton. She wrote with a sensuality and burgeoning political consciousness that pressed against the boundaries of what could be expressed by a woman in 1950s and 1960s Iran. She paid a high price for her art, shouldering the disapproval of society and her family, having her only child taken away, and spending time in mental institutions. Farrokhzad died in a car accident in 1967 at the age of thirty-two. Sin is a tribute to the work and life of this remarkable poet.

I did not know about the Iranian poet, Forough Farrokhzad until @GatheringBooks posted a read along chat for this book. She was a modernist, living in a country where women were subjugated by men. She chose to rebel and live the life that she imagined for herself. Her feminist poetry is bold and at times erotic. Unfortunately, she died in a car accident at 32. The poems were translated from Farsi, and the translator‘s notes are most helpful.

Notafraidofwords I learned about her in college and it was life-changing 8mo
DivineDiana @Notafraidofwords I want to read her biography. There was some information in the book, but I want more! 8mo
GatheringBooks i really am glad that you liked this! πŸ§šπŸΌβ€β™€οΈπŸ˜πŸ˜˜πŸ“š enjoyed the poems tremendously too! 8mo

#WomenReadWomen2019 ReadAlong Chat for our February title | Discussion Q2. This is the final Q. I first learned about Farrokhzad through her translator, Iranian American Poet Sholeh Wolpe who was one of the speakers for the Singapore Writers Festival back in 2017, I think. I was entranced by her and equally moved by her reading aloud from Farrokhzad‘s poems that she translated as seen in the images above which I have taken.

Carolyn11215 I liked the biographical information and would really like to learn more about her life. Losing son and ending up in asylum must have been horribly punishing. 9mo
GatheringBooks @Carolyn11215 it was the loss of her child which also struck me the most. its totality. what she needed to give up in order for her to be who she is. 9mo
DivineDiana @Carolyn11215 @GatheringBooks Yes, I was astounded that she chose to leave her child. I want to read her biography to find out if she ever saw him again. I had the privilege of attending an author‘s talk with another Iranian woman writer this week, Marjane Satrapi. A powerful woman! (edited) 8mo

#WomenReadWomen2019 February ReadAlong Chat is here!!! Since I am traveling the entire day (off to Sydney!), I thought I better post this before my morning flight and I become incommunicado. Tagging those who have expressed interest to join us. If you are not tagged, but would like to weigh in anyway, would be happy to hear your thoughts. Would be responding quite late though as travel time is eight hours!! Posting last discussion Q in a bit.

Carolyn11215 Honestly, I got through about half the book and couldn‘t finish. None of her poems really resonated for me. I find poetry pretty challenging in general so unless I can hear the music or find the humor or am really moved by the subject matter I just...can‘t. Maybe if I understood Persian and could hear/understand poetry in language written that would have helped but not sure. (edited) 9mo
Carolyn11215 By the way, there is a well reviewed book of fiction about her life that I have put on my TBR because I think her life itself was pretty fascinating even if her poetry doesn‘t speak to me. Will try to find and tag the book. (edited) 9mo
suzisteffen @GatheringBooks shoot, I haven‘t had the chance but will see what I can do tonight! Hope your flight is great. I love Sydney! (edited) 9mo

GatheringBooks @Carolyn11215 i also found the second half of the book somewhat heavy going and challenging with so many allusions that i am not familiar with or have no knowledge of. i am grateful to the translator notes found at the end which provided illumination so i had to go back again to re-read some of the poems but it has removed me from the rhythm and the entire spirit of what prompted the words to come out of her. that being said, i found it a good ⬇️ 9mo
GatheringBooks @Carolyn11215 exercise in expanding my reading comfort zone and simply going with it regardless of my own inadequacies in understanding. i think it helped that i wanted to hear the power in her voice and its growing maturity - especially in the end when she finally came into herself and embraced who she is regardless of how others perceived her. 9mo
GatheringBooks @suzisteffen thanks for the well wishes! now at my friends‘ place in erskineville and the weather is glorious 😍 last time i was in sydney was 2010 i think. it has been too long. 9mo
DivineDiana @Carolyn11215 Thank you! Stacked! 8mo
DivineDiana @GatheringBooks I apologize for my late comments, but I wanted you to know that I appreciate your bringing this author to my attention. I was in love with an Iranian man, whom I met while he was studying in the US. Upon my college graduation, in the late 70‘s, I went to visit him in Iran. My sister married one of his brothers. Agree that translator notes helped! Fascinating! 8mo
DivineDiana There were 5 poems that resonated with me the most. I made individual posts on those poems. Already tagged @GatheringBooks. Will go back and tag @Carolyn11215 8mo

Reborn
By Forugh Farrokhzad

β€œIn a room the size of loneliness,
My heart‘s the size of love.
It contemplates its simple pretexts for happiness:
the beauty of the flowers‘ wilting in a vase,
the sapling you planted in our garden,
and the canaries‘ song-the size of a window.”

The Sun Rises
By Furugh Farrukhzad

β€œLook how night along our path
melts like wax in drops, in drops,
my dark eyes drink sleep‘s wine
from your cup of lullabies.
Upon the cradles of my poetry
You waft your breath and look,
the sunrise floods us with light.”

Those Days
By Forugh Farrrokhzad

β€œThose days are gone,
those silent snowy days when from inside
a warm room I kept watch over snow
-my unsullied snow-
descending like old lint upon an old wooden ladder,
the clothesline‘s slack rope,and the old pine‘s fur;
and I thought of tomorrow-
tomorrow...that slippery mass of white.”

Our #WomenReadWomen2019 ReadAlong book in Feb is Farrokhzad‘s β€œSin.” I learned about this Iranian poet through her translator, Iranian-American Sholeh Wolpe, a veritable enchantress, who graced the Singapore Writers Festival 2 years ago.
