It Happens All the Time
It Happens All the Time: A Novel | Amy Hatvany
25 posts | 23 read | 26 to read
From master storyteller Amy Hatvanywhose writing has been hailed as gripping and emotionally honest (Stephanie Evanovich, New York Times betselling author)comes a provocative and compelling novel about two friends whose lives are changed by a drunken kiss. I want to rewind the clock, take back the night when the world shattered. I want to erase everything that went wrong. Amber Bryant and Tyler Hicks have been best friends since they were teenagerstrusting and depending on each other through some of the darkest periods of their young lives. And while Amber has always felt that their relationship is strictly platonic, Tyler has long harbored the secret desire that they might one day become more than friends. Returning home for the summer after her college graduation, Amber begins spending more time with Tyler than she has in years. Despite the fact that Amber is engaged to her college sweetheart, a flirtation begins to grow between them. One night, fueled by alcohol and concerns about whether shes getting married too young, Amber kisses Tyler. What happens next will change them forever. In alternating points of view, It Happens All the Time examines the complexity of sexual dynamics between men and women and offers an incisive exploration of gender roles, expectations, and the ever-timely issue of consent.

I made it just past 100 pages and the thought of 200 more pages of ridiculous characterization just made my heart sink. Amber and Tyler have been besties since they were 14. Tyler has harboured more romantic feelings for Amber. A thing happens which causes Amber to take him at gunpoint to a remote cabin. Sexual assault is a serious topic…and so is Amber‘s eating disorder, but the whole thing reads like something on Wattpad. Blech.

I found this one on Libby, and didn't read the description before starting the audiobook. So far, I'm not sure how I feel about it... it's well written, and the narrators do a wonderful job.... but it's a tough subject for a lot of people. I think I'm going to finish it, as I'm hoping I got past the uncomfortable part already.

Trigger warnings include anorexia, mental health issues, and rape.

A compulsive read. Couldn't put it down. Curious about the inclusion of anorexia and anxiety. Not sure what purpose they served in a book about sexual assault, but they were both well done. All aspects of the book were well researched. Def pick.

I read this book a while back after reading a couple of others by the same author. I was looking forward to starting it with all the great reviews i was seeing on GR & IG yet i was hesitant at the same time because of the subject matter and the triggers this may cause, however after reading that Amy herself had been through an experience the same as the book covered gave me so much hope and belief that if someone could get it right it would.. 1

bibliophagist89 2 her, that since she's been through this she was the right person to do us all justice! I also seen that she wanted to do it from both perspectives - victim & perp girl/boy - as she has a teenage son & daughter that she wants to see why this behaviour isn't or never will be correct. I think she took on a VERY controversial topic and she smashed it! Well Done Amy! 📚📚📚 7y

This one made me really uncomfortable and I almost stopped reading, but that was more because of the subject matter as opposed to poor writing. This is definitely not a light summer read.

Nope. This book made me angry on so many levels which unfortunately I am seemingly in the great minority with so I'll keep my opinions to myself. But I hated it and I'm still angry.

Debiw781 Ok now I'm curious as to why... 7y

Heavy, but an excellent book. From POVs of both victim + rapist, who is her best friend.

It's uncomfortable to be in Tyler's mind as he tries to convince himself of what he did/didn't do. I had no trouble connecting with the characters, but I hated Tyler's thoughts + actions. I felt betrayed by him personally, even as a reader. Rape culture (consent + victim blaming, including blaming herself) and victim advocacy are themes.

ScientistSam Great review. It sounds like a book I wouldn't enjoy reading, but maybe should read 7y

intothehallofbooks @Bklover Disturbing, for sure. I appreciate reading the story thru Tyler's POV now that I've done it. But it didn't make it easy and I didn't like what happened one bit. 7y
intothehallofbooks @Cinfhen Thank you! I really like this author. 7y
intothehallofbooks @ScientistSam Thank you! That's a great way to put it. I love this author and agree that there is a ton of value in reading this one. 7y
MyNamesParadise Omg I'm not sure I could handle this one right now- I'm listening to Missoula in my car and that's so emotionally draining as it is 😞 7y
intothehallofbooks @MyNamesParadise I think you're right, both would probably be very draining! This one is really good, if you're interested in considering it later. I'm reading something lighter now that I finished It Happens All The Time. 7y

--> This book is intense immediately, right from the first chapter. I'm also listening to the audiobook: Kirby Heyborne and Julia Whelan are the narrators. Both are great but Kirby Heyborne is just wow wow wow.

The few complaints I have about this book pale in comparison to the importance of this book. Hatvany tells this story from two perspectives, giving us a look inside both the victim and the rapist's minds. What's so smart about this is the fact that she is acknowledging that rapists aren't always the creeps hiding in the bushes. Sometimes, they're people you care about. It's hard to read but man is it important. I'll be thinking on this a while.

This was messy, real, raw, unflinchingly honest and heartbreaking, but in the end there was hope and a sense of healing. It was also beautiful, thought provoking, and utterly crucial, this book needs to be read, by anyone and everyone. I smell a giveaway coming, this is one where I‘ll be pushing it on everyone I know, unapologetically.

Bklover This sounds interesting! 7y

I went in looking for a beach read, and ended up enraged at both main characters. While they start out as best friends, the relationship is obviously poisonous and you watch as he takes advantage of her in every way. Important subject matter, but not at all what I signed up for!

Bostonmomx2 Ya well she ends up taking advantage of him too and the. He ends up paying the price. I hated this girl Amber and I hated this book. I'm soooo in the minority tho. 7y
