Savage Theories
Savage Theories | Pola Oloixarac
10 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
A novel of seduction and madness, hate and love, set in the world of Argentinean academia and animated by the spirits of Wittgenstein, Rousseau, Nabokov and Bolano Rosa Ostreech, a pseudonym for the novel s beautiful but self-conscious narrator, carries around a trilingual edition of Aristotle s "Metaphysics," struggles with her thesis on violence and culture, sleepswith a bourgeois former guerrilla, and pursues her elderly professor with a highly charged blend oferoticism and desperation. Elsewhere on campus, Pabst and Kamtchowsky tour the underground scene of Buenos Aires, dabbling in ketamine, group sex, video games, and hacking. And in Africa in 1917, a Dutch anthropologist named Johan van Vliet begins work on a theory that explains human consciousness and civilization by reference to our early primate ancestors animals, who, in the process of becominghuman, spent thousands of years as prey. "Savage Theories" wryly explores fear and violence, war and sex, eroticism and philosophy. Its complex and flawed characters grapple with a mess of impossible, visionary theories, searching for their place in our fragmented digital world."

A #Tournamentofbooks pick. I just re-read it‘s blurb (it‘s been kicking around my #TBR list for a while and I kinda forgot what it was about 🙄) and am super excited to dig in. Goodreads and Litsy aren‘t giving it very good reviews but it sounds like my kind of 📖... time will tell, I suppose.
☠️Happy Friday the 13th, Littens!😈

Ok, I'm pretty sure this one needs no explanation!

thebluestocking I didn‘t even put it on my list because of the play-in factor. Glad I‘m not missing out! 6y
Redwritinghood I was avoiding this one. Seems like that was the right decision. 6y
AceOnRoam @thebluestocking I'm zero for three on the play in with a DNF at 10% for this and Stephen Florida and 40% for The Idiot. At least I gave them a shot LOL. 6y

Bailedbailed

I can't do it. Either I'm not smart enough or this is a pretentious load of ??. There's a notoriously unattractive couple who are investigators of sex. There's an academic obsessed with a theory. (What theory? Not sure). She has a fish. There are allusions to Rousseau and Kant. There are multiple $3 words. And there's lines like this: "she located a new Neverland within the border of her backside." ? ?? So bad. Life is too short.

Redwritinghood Ugh! Sounds awful. 6y
thebluestocking I‘m so glad this is a play-in round pick for the Tournament. I usually just skip right over those. Thanks for the warning about this one. #tob18 6y
Zelma Wow, sounds awful and so not my style. Thanks for the heads up! 6y

LeahBergen Blech! 6y
merelybookish @thebluestocking @Zelma I really wanted this to be a hidden gem on the list. But it's not. Glad I saved you some time. 6y
batsy I was interested to read this when I heard about her years ago in Granta (I think). This sounds awful! But your bail is so good that I also kind of want to hate read! 6y
merelybookish @batsy please read it! Maybe you can explain it to me. ☺️ I think I'm not smart enough and that it's highly allusive/erudite/pretentious 😬. I guess it helps if you know about Argentina's Dirty War -- which I do not. But if it beats The Idiot and Stephen Florida (two novels I loved) I will be seriously bummed! 6y
merelybookish @batsy Most of the people in the TOB group on Goodreads have bailed too. So I'm not alone. 6y
batsy The reviews on GR are wildly divergent! I'll check out the ToB group, thanks. I really want to read The Idiot and I'm glad to hear that you liked it, it's quite long but I hope to squeeze it in before March. Also want to get to Stephen Florida. If I have one tiny complaint about ToB is that we need more time! 6y
merelybookish @batsy People are split on the Idiot too. I get why not everyone likes it, but I really enjoyed the main character's voice and perspective. Every year, a friend and I try to read as many new releases as we can that could make the list. Our goal is to have read everything on the list before it's released. (We have never been close.) 😂 6y
batsy It's a smart plan to split the reading between the two of you! 😁 I took a peek at the GR ToB group and the discussions are very interesting 👍 6y
merelybookish @batsy Oh good! There are some real diehards on there! 6y

Excellent #bookhaul, courtesy of my local public library. (I love being an academic librarian, don't get me wrong. But still, there's just something about a public library that speaks to my soul...)

Here's a phrase you don't often hear: "Comedic philosophy noir."
