Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack
Strange Affair of Spring Heeled Jack | Mark Hodder
16 posts | 20 read | 13 to read
London, 1861. Sir Richard Francis Burton - explorer, linguist, scholar, and swordsman; his reputation tarnished; his career in tatters; his former partner missing and probably dead. Algernon Charles Swinburne - unsuccessful poet and follower of de Sade, for whom pain is pleasure, and brandy is ruin! Their investigations lead them to one of the defining events of the age, and the terrifying possibility that the world they inhabit shouldn't exist at all!

Me: “Never judge a book by its cover!”
Also me: *buys an entire book series because I love the covers* 😳

In my defense, look how amazing these covers are (in a bizarre steampunk kinda way)! 🤩

LitStephanie The automated aristocrats one is pretty bizarre! 😁 1y
Gissy Love those covers too! 😍🙋🏽‍♀️Did you read the series? Sounds interesting! 1y

DaveGreen7777 @Gissy I did read the “Spring-Heeled Jack” book. It was good… but very bizarre! It even featured a steampunk version of Charles Darwin himself! 😱 1y
Gissy @DaveGreen7777 That is weird😳 1y
Branwen These DO look amazing! 😱💕📚 A totally justifiable purchase, in my opinion! 😁 1y
DogMomIrene I so get this. I‘ll see beautiful rebranded covers for series I love and I have to restrain myself.😂 1y
DaveGreen7777 @Branwen HA HA, thank you! 😁 1y
DaveGreen7777 @DogMomIrene I‘m glad Littens can understand my purchasing practices! 😁 1y
Avanders Lol. I…. Always judge books by their covers. But like… just books. 🤭😂 1y
DaveGreen7777 @Avanders Very good advice! 😁 1y
Avanders 😁 Also, when you read the first one of these … tag me? I may be interested 😄 1y
DaveGreen7777 @Avanders I have actually read the Springheeled Jack book. I really liked it! It‘s weird and dark at parts, but it‘s such a fascinating alternate history that even features steampunk versions of famous historical figures like Charles Darwin and Florence Nightengale! 😱 1y
Avanders Oooh ok fun! Thanks! 😁🤩 1y
RaeLovesToRead How did I miss this post?? 😲 I adore the UK covers to thus series too ❤ 1y
DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead Hee hee, fun fact, whenever I see a poll on Bookstagram asking if the U.S. or U.K. covers are better, more often than not I vote for the U.K. ones. The U.K. has all the coolest stuff, especially when it comes to book covers… and rock bands… and Raes! 😎 1y
RaeLovesToRead Awww! 😊💕 You guys have The Killers though! When I finally manage to visit the US, I'll probably end up buying a load of books I already own, but with US covers 😁😁 1y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Where does everyone buy UK covers? 1y

Pickpick

A delightfully humorous romp through steam-punk, alternate-history Victorian England. Light-hearted & frequently funny. Great for those who like steam-punk, Victorian Era mysteries, or historical fiction.

Mehso-so

It was a good read, but the last part seemed a bit rushed. I feel like there could be more to this story.

Decided to finally continue reading a book I'd put down months ago and found this Valentine's card I'd been using as a bookmark 😊❤
Anyone else like to use cards as bookmarks?

For all that I read over 17h this weekend, I only finished one graphic novel and a book with only 2 Ch. left. This because I read ALL THE BOOKS, and one of them is 1k pages long. 😂 So let's start another one, why don't I? 🙄 This one is short. Short stories even. And essays. And not in Litsy database, so I tagged the first book in the series.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk I liked The Strange Affair of Spring-Heeled Jack but never kept going with the series. One day, I suppose... 6y
Leniverse @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I‘ve only read the first one too, but this companion volume is available on Kindle Unlimited where I currently have a 3-month trial. It‘s a companion to the first two books, so I guess I should have read book 2 first, but it doesn‘t seem too heavy on the spoilers. 6y

This alternate history steampunk series chronicles the adventures of real-life explorer Sir Richard Francis Burton and his buddy, real-life poet and sado-masochist Algernon Swinburne. The bad guys find this out when they capture and torture Swinburne and he has the time of his life. #booklove17 #SandM

Leniverse 😮 I must have this! 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @Leniverse I haven't read the rest of the series, but this was a fun wild ride. 7y

This is the only steampunk book I've read. I do have others (including the rest of this series) but they're all in boxes (hence no photo). I quite liked it, suited the mystery lover in me. I read so long ago, I don't recall who were all the (real) Victorian people in it. I would however want to own what passed for a taxi in this book. Would make a killing flitting people about town. #seasonsreading2016 #steampunk

melissanorr This has been on my TBR since I stumbled across it at the library! 7y
drokka @melissanorr I really need to find the next ones to catch up on the series. If only we could invent a time machine. 7y
