Mr. Punch - 20th Anniversary Edition | Neil Gaiman
8 posts | 15 read | 13 to read
Adark and frightening fully painted novella, MR. PUNCH tells the tale of a young boy's loss of innocence resulting from a horrific confrontation with his past. Spending a summer at his grandfather's seaside arcade, a troubled adolescent harmlessly becomes involved with a mysterious Punch and Judy Man and a mermaid-portraying woman. But when the violent puppet show triggers buried memories of the boy's family, the lives of all become feverishly intertwined. With disturbing mysteries and half-truths uncontrollably unraveling, the young boy is forced to deal with his family's dark secrets of violence, betrayal, and guilt. Written by New York Times best-selling novelist Neil Gaiman, with unwordly illustrations by artist Dave McKean, MR. PUNCH - 20TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION is the new deluxe cut of this landmark original graphic novel. Includes bonus material.

Haven't read this one in a while. Might make for some good seasonal reading this #halloween .

#GetMovin Day 4: When one faces monstrosities and confronts inner demons reified into creepy dancing murderous puppets, one can not help but wonder what it means, really, to be #Human. Perhaps that is what makes Gaiman‘s strangenesses work so well, at the very heart of it is the rumination about finding one‘s humanity despite (or maybe even because of) atrocities, madness, and travesties of truths and beauty.

Cinfhen This cover FREAKS ME OUT!!! Puppets give me the creeps 😱😱😱😱 4y

#LyricalApril Day 15: #TheMonster - Gaiman does monsters good, especially when paired with McKean. This one here is savage with a bit of madness thrown into the mix.

Cinfhen Nice choice 💞 5y
GatheringBooks @Cinfhen there is such thick darkness here, it dances like a demented puppet on a string :) 5y

For me, Neil Gaiman is at his best when paired with Dave McKean. A tale about the unreliability of memory and the violence that threatens to impinge upon childhood innocence. The illustrations are wonderful and Gaiman's writing is lean and refreshingly free of easy sentimentality.

What on earth did I just read?! This was beyond bizarre. The only reason I read this was because Neil Gaiman wrote it. I could not make heads or tales of this story, it was a total waste of time. It's the story of a young boy's life related to the Punch and Judy puppet shows and the juxtaposition of it with the real life events of his family.
