Jack: The True Story of Jack and the Beanstalk
Jack: The True Story of Jack and the Beanstalk | Liesl Shurtliff
7 posts | 6 read | 3 to read
Fairy tale fans will give a GIANT cheer for this funny retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk from the New York Times Bestselling author of Rump and Red! All his life, Jack has longed for an adventure, so when giants turn up in the neighbor's cabbage patch, he is thrilled! Soon Jack is chasing them to a land beyond the clouds, with his little sister, Annabella, in tow. The kingdom of giants is full of super-sized fun: puddings to swim in, spoons to use as catapults, monster toads to carry off pesky little sisters. . . . But Jack and Annabella are on a mission. The king of the giants has taken something that belongs to them, and theyll do anythingeven dive into a smelly tureen of green bean soupto get it back. Liesl Shurtliff has the uncanny ability to make magical worlds feel utterly real, and the best part is: you dont even need a beanstalk to visit them. Tim Federle, author of Better Nate than Ever "A delightful story of family, perseverance, and courage." Booklist From the Hardcover edition.

I told my husband that when I finished reading “Jack,” I‘d help him tidy the apartment. I started with a long-ignored corner & immediately found these!😱

The label reads, “Mystery beans! Fun climbers that surprise you.” They were given to the members of his band by a wandering nomad girl in the audience who was looking for a place to couch-surf. It‘s weird that we have them in the first place, & weirder still that I stumbled upon them when I did!

Charles Love it 😍 6y
DivineDiana A message from the Universe! 😉 6y
Kaye Did she give them to everyone or only the people who offered her a couch ? Oughta plant them this year and see what grows. 😁 (edited) 6y

monalyisha @Kaye The singer (& his wife, who plays the keys) offered to let her crash, so everyone in the band got ‘em. Now that we remember that we have them, we‘ll definitely stick them in the garden! 🌱 6y
Kaye They look a bit like kidney beans, do you think ? Maybe you‘ll get something from them to do a little “Smoking and Jokin “. If you do, could you send me a small sample ? 😁 Maybe I could use that and eliminate some of the prescriptions I take. 6y

Mehso-so

I think if I were an actual child reading this book, my rating would be much higher. The story got better as it progressed, but it never “grew” on me (har, har) the way I expected it to. I loved “Rump” by the same author. The writing in this one wasn‘t quite so delicate & tender (she says about a book named after a rear-end 🤷‍♀️🍑). I did like “Jack”‘s overall message about the magic of “Growing Things.”

“Growing is powerful, isn‘t it?”
“Very powerful,” said Papa. “From one tiny seed you can grow a tree as big as the giants. Now, that‘s magic, if you ask me.”

Does book clutter count as mess? Because, if so, I'm thinking there is no way my house will be "clean" when guests arrive tomorrow. C'est la vie.

In other news, I'm borrowing an idea from @intothehallofbooks because I started from scratch on Goodreads and have almost no friends! Welcoming all Littens!

LauraBrook If book clutter counts as mess then no one should come in my house, ever. Actually, that might be okay. 😉 7y
