Yashim is no ordinary detective. It's not that he's particularly brave. Or that he cooks so well, or reads French novels. Not even that his best friend is the Ambassador from Poland, whose country has vanished from the map. Yashim is a eunuch. As the Sultan plans a series of radical reforms to his empire, a concubine is strangled in the palace harem. And a young cadet is found butchered in the streets of Istanbul. Delving deep into the city's crooked alleyways, and deeper still into its tumultuous past, Yashim discovers that some people will go to any lengths to preserve the traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Brilliantly evoking Istanbul in the 1830s, The Ottoman Detective is a fast-paced literary thriller with a spectacular cast, from mystic orders and lissom archivists to soup-makers and a seductive ambassador's wife. Darker than any of these is the mysterious figure who controls the Sultan's harem.

This was a gift from my wonderful pen pal, and I‘m glad I finally read it. It‘s a beautifully atmospheric mystery. From the sultan‘s palace and harem, to the alleys and markets of the city herself, the writing transports the reader to 1830s Istanbul. The mystery behind the series of murders is complex and well-written, and the book is filled with well-developed characters and cinematic scenes. This was brilliant. Thank you @Mitch 😘

Mitch So glad it hit the spot! 🌟👍🏼🌟 3y
DGRachel @Mitch It really did! I‘ve wanted to go to Turkey for years now, thanks to the Dizis I watch, but I want to even more now after reading this. You know, if travel is ever safe again... (edited) 3y

I‘m switching from Thief of Souls to this one for night time reading in the hopes that I can avoid waking up from nightmares at 1:30 in the morning. It‘s a gift that has been sitting unread on my shelves for too long and with its #mustacheoncover is perfect for #booked2021. ☺️

I still can‘t settle on a book. Four books now “in progress” and I‘m starting this one. Fingers crossed. I‘ve been looking forward to it for ages and have let it sit on my shelf far too long.

MsMelissa I have a e-copy of this book that I haven‘t read yet, so I really hope you enjoy it 🤞🏻 4y
rwmg I loved it. The cooking will want you to head for your nearest Turkish restaurant. Includes one jaw-dropping fact. Great series. 4y
