The Flood Girls
The Flood Girls | Richard Fifield
February 2016 Indie Next List Pick This snappy, sassy redemption story set in small-town Montana is a wild and crazy debut novel by a talented young writer (Jackie Collins), filled with an uproarious and unforgettable cast of characters you wont want to leave behind. [The Flood Girls] includes barfights and AA meetings, a parade, a wedding, and a black bear, all of which Fifield juggles beautifully...The Wild West earns its name all over again in this lovable chronicle of small-town insanity. Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review Welcome to Quinn, Montana, population: 956. A town where nearly all of the volunteer firemen are named Jim, where The Dirty Shamethe only bar in townrefuses to serve mixed drinks (too much work), where the locals hate the newcomers (then again, they hate the locals, too), and where the town softball team has never even come close to having a winning season. Until now. Rachel Flood has snuck back into town after leaving behind a trail of chaos nine years prior. Shes here to make amends, but nobody wants to hear it, especially her mother, Laverna. But with the help of a local boy named Jake and a little soul-searching, she just might make things right. In the spirit of Empire Falls and A League of Their Own, with the caustic wit of Whered You Go, Bernadette thrown in for good measure, Richard Fifields hilarious and heartwarming debut will have you laughing through tears.

Quite touching and comical at times, a much faster read that I anticipated!

Reading for a book club. Was expecting to not like it and I am feeling nit picky about several things. Still—some great and hilarious writing and I might just get sucked into this one.

Every night, Frank played harmonica for the cats.

wanderinglynn Now that is an intriguing first line. I want to know why does he do this? What cats? Where is this harmonica player that he can play for cats? So many questions!!! 4y
SamAnne @wanderinglynn Me too! Just started this morning. So many questions! 4y

This book started out slow for me: the comparison to A League of Their Own seemed strained and I disliked most of the characters. It had some moments, but it was mostly slow throughout the book. The book picked up speed 3/4 through, but then it threw a curveball, no pun intended! I wouldn‘t recommend this book.

I struggled with finishing this book for some reason. It reminded me of about five different books I have read before so maybe it was the predictability that held me from finishing it for so long. However, it started grabbing my attention when I was about a third done with the book and the ending really devastated me and took me by surprise. I would love to see this book become a movie and plan on recommending it

The opening line of this book was perfection. "Every night, Frank played harmonica for the cats." Richard Fifield captures small town life and complexities of family disfunction. With characters that draw you in, humor, and realism, this book reminds me of Richard Russo novels. Poignant, bittersweet, but with a resolution that allows for happiness through tears. Well worth the read.

Omgosh this was a fun but Raw Story! It's back in that 80s so it's a memory flood since I was an 80s teen. Highly recommend! ❤️️

Giving this one a so-so because of the ending. It didn't feel true to the story for me. Otherwise, fun, colorful characters in a quick-paced small town story.

@Yournewfriendsams how did you feel about the ending?

Small town scandal paired with one woman's journey to recovery had me flying through this book. Fifield is really talented at nuancing the humor and sadness of everyday life in his writing. The book felt so real.

I could have done without the sports and the ending, but Flood Girls was a very fun and colorful story.

Should probably stop impulse buying books for myself when the holidays are around the corner, but what is a girl supposed to do when she finds a target gift card in a box of random stuff in her bedroom? Hoping the #targetbookclub makes good picks! #nowreading

Not sure how I feel about this one. Characters so eclectic and funny that I read several passages out loud to my husband, but there was a lingering hopelessness about their lives I found really uncomfortable.

Litsy is experiencing technical difficulties at the moment (i.e., we are flooding Litsy with awesomeness today and its struggling to keep up with all the rad bookishness.)

They are working to fix it, but until then, I know you other book lovers join me in saying, "Golly gee, I guess I'll just have to read a book." ?

Keep being awesome, Littens! ????

GlitteryOtters #biblioweekend was just too much awesome for Litsy to handle this weekend. 😂😂 Poor Litsy! 8y
Liberty @Grimlock Have you posted about it before? If so, you can click the title in that post, then click the '+' option, (where you select 'quote' 'review' etc.) and it should add it for you automatically. 8y
Grimlock @Liberty the problem is I haven't. And I haven't seen anyone post about it. 8y

I picked this up at the library without even reading the blurb. It took me a few chapters to find my rhythm with it but once I did it flew, mostly due to Fields's voice. Lovely and unexpectedly emotional. Funny too. Kind of broke my heart a bit (in a good way).

I had a tough time getting into this book but I'm so glad I stuck it out. I began to feel like I was a part of this small town. A worthwhile read in my opinion, give it a try!

MadCatRamble I had a similar reaction to it. Slow to start, but by the end I was surprisingly attached! 8y

So that ending came out of nowhere! Did not expect to cry after a book that for the most part had been light and fun. Then BAM! I enjoyed it for the most part. Almost lost me in the middle, but I'm glad I stayed with it.

I haven't enjoyed an author's "voice" so much since I first read Christopher Moore & Tom Robbins. The characters here are as memorable as they get, & I was casting roles for the big-screen adaptation as I read. I will say, though, I was completely unprepared for the violent punch-to-the-gut ending.
