Astronomy-loving Calliope June has Tourette syndrome, so she sometimes makes faces or noises that she doesn't mean to make. When she and her mother move yet again, she tries to hide her TS. But it isn't long before the kids at her new school realize she's different. Only Calliope's neighbor, who is also the popular student body president, sees her as she truly is--an interesting person and a good friend. But is he brave enough to take their friendship public? As Calliope navigates school, she must also face her mother's new relationship and the fact that they might be moving--again--just as she starts to make friends and finally accept her differences. Ellie Terry's affecting debut will speak to a wide audience about being true to oneself.

I love this book! I re-read this book over the break and I think It was such a quick but meaningful book that everyone needs to read once in their life time.
For me, I really enjoyed this book because I really like the perspective of the two characters and also the layout of the words. It was easy for my eyes to read and also the storyline was very cute and wholesome and we get to learn about the life of someone who has Tourettes.

rosa.kim This story follows the life of Calli, she lives with a medical condition called Tourettes. All her life she moves around state to state because of her mother. One day Call and her mother pack up and move to the state Utah, Just on the first day she moved to Utah we get introduced to her neighbour, Jinsong.
Calli got made fun of her Tourettes a bunch and due to that she doesn't have much friends, But after a few walks home together Jinsong and-

rosa.kim Calli become close friends, but only after school hours. However one day Calli gets made fun of and Jinsong finally stands up for her and the whole school is now teasing, not just Calli but Jinsong as well for standing up for the weird girl.
At first Jinsong was embarrassed to be known as Calli's friend up one day they have a break through and they become very confident with their friendship.

rosa.kim They open up to each other and Calli understands that Jinsong also got made fun of because of his race. They now share a special moment together and understand each other more. But just as things were looking better for the both of them Calli's mother decides to move again and leaves Utah. Read to find out what happens to them and if the move will effect there strong friendship. (edited) 14mo
rosa.kim Another reason they I really like this book is, When the perspective of the character changes in the writing, they never say who is who and it really gets your brain thinking about who is talking because of the content clues. I really enjoy books like these.
If you like cute and wholesome but educational books, I really recommend this book!

Yesterday I had a convo with someone who, like Calliope, was encouraged to hide a medical condition. That may have served us 40 years ago, but it‘s not great for the whole community. I appreciate this book shows all the prejudicial ways we think of and treat people with disabilities. (We need to figure that out sooner rather than later.) At the same time Calliope figures out how best to move forward for herself.

Read Harder Challenge 2021: Read An Own Voices Book About Disability

“Written in a patchwork of prose poetry and free verse, Terry‘s narrative deftly represents the reality of TS in its fullness. It works to deconstruct common misconceptions, such as that those who have TS have a propensity to swear, and sheds light on the raw confusion and the frightening nature of a physical experience that is utterly unpredictable . . . A few of my struggling readers devoured this book this year, and I had to give it a try. What a great story about acceptance and friendship. 😊 With alternating points of view and varying structure of prose and story, this was a great read that was hard to put down. The main character has Tourette‘s Syndrome and struggles with acceptance and her mother. Definitely something I‘d recommend to students this upcoming school year!

This is a sad story about a girl with Tourette‘s who moves all the time every time her mama breaks up with her boyfriend her mom forces her to move and keep her hair cut extra short. If you would like an emotional story that gets happier in the end then read this book

What a wonderful story! The middle school issues are believable, Calliope and Jinsong‘s friendship touched my heart, and we get an authentic story of a girl dealing with a syndrome not often found in middle grade novels. I would have liked a different ending, but this was perfect, #huggable .

ReadingRover This looks so good! 6y
Peddler410 @ReadingRover it really was! And the author has Tourette syndrome herself, hence the authentic story. 6y

I wish I liked this one more than I do 😕

The primary narrator, Calli, feels very authentic and seems to echo a lot of the author's experiences. It's great to see an #ownvoices middle grade story about a girl with Tourette syndrome.

But the secondary narrator, Jinsong, rings hollow to me, and the focus on crushes feels too old for the rest of the book-- especially because the cover is trying to sell it as friendship...
