Meet Mike Engleby, a second-year student at university. Despite the fact that Mike is obviously intelligent, and involved in many clubs, it is clear that something about Mike is not quite right. When he becomes fixated on a classmate named Jennifer Arkland, and she goes missing, we are left with the looming question: Is Mike Engleby involved? From the Trade Paperback edition.

This book just didn't live up to all the hype and I found it disappointing.
But the good news is I can now move on to a new book!

Creepy, disturbing, uncomfortable, yet utterly compelling.
I‘m not even sure I actually liked it- but it was fascinating and I‘ve disappeared down the rabbit hole of internet opinions for the last hour seeing what reactions are like to the last chapter.
@Cathythoughts I love your posts as you were reading it - it truly does wreck your mind! Very clever, though still undecided about the ending.

Cathythoughts I‘m so excited you read it !! Great review, your first sentence says it all. Compelling , creepy, head wrecking ! I love how details emerge ... and the plot thickens. Very interesting book. One I‘ll remember. It‘s so unique.... you have me musing over the ending as I have morning coffee here ... 6y
TrishB @Cathythoughts I started a new book on the bus this morning but my head was definitely still in this one. Powerful stuff.....makes you really think! I had to go looking to see what people thought of the end as I was like 🤷‍♀️ what!! I don‘t mind ambiguous endings though. 6y

#HeatOfJuly #blurredlines ENGLEBY is not everyone‘s cup of tea. But I loved it. Lots of blurred lines in the story , and in Englebys mind.

BarbaraBB I loved this one too! My favourite Faulks after 6y
TrishB Have this one on the tbr! Will try to get to it this month! 6y
Kaye Can you guys tell me if Birdsong has lots of romance type stuff in it ? I‘ve always heard how good it is but that movie cover reminds me of a romance. If it‘s more about the war, that sounds better to me (edited) 6y

Cathythoughts Hi @Kaye I havnt read that one yet ( I bought the play by mistake 🙄... instead of.. the novel) Must get the book ! 6y
Cinfhen Sounds good! Why do u think it‘s a love it/hate it read??? 6y
Cathythoughts @Cinfhen maybe a bit like The Secret History.. a bit like Catcher in the Rye ( although I really liked Holden ) ( without giving too much away) this MC is not very likable .. sinister .. but I still loved the book , & the psychology of it. And there‘s a murder (edited) 6y
Cinfhen I‘m stacking!!!! 6y
chapter_fifty2017 I really like the author too l'm stacking too 6y
BarbaraBB @Kaye I haven‘t seen the movie but I loved Birdsong. It is the contrast between the love story and the trenches that makes it so good. It is definitely no romance, it is bittersweet i‘d say. 6y
Kaye Thanks @BarbaraBB I‘ve eyed the book for a long time. I know it was so popular, but wasn‘t sure about it. I guess I shouldn‘t judge a book by its “ movie cover “ . 6y
BarbaraBB @Kaye No don‘t. They are always so exaggerated! 6y
Kaye @BarbaraBB 👍🏼 6y

The author says he dreamt this character & the book flowed out of him , that he didn‘t
“Write it “
I find this fascinating .
For all his madness , I found a great clarity in Englebys thoughts.
This is murderous, upsetting, bleak , & poignant
But for me , it was always brilliant !
“ people are like icebergs , we only see this little piece at the top “
“.....I have a world in my mind , in the inexhaustible repertoire of my memory “ ....🙏🏻

TrishB Lovely review 💕 6y
Cathythoughts @TrishB thanks! I don‘t know if it‘s for everyone, but I loved this one. 6y

When I was deciding what to read after finishing Ready Player One, it was a toss up between this and The Refugees. I have had this on my bookshelf for about 8 years, so I'm keeping it to hand so that I get around to it this year!

RadicalReader @rockabillybibliophile I would run…no jump into the pages of this incredible sounding book 6y

Sebastian Faulks : Engleby ! Has anyone read this ? They are raving about it on the radio at the minute... it‘s about 30 years old ? Can‘t find it on Litsy... they are making a great case for it in the radio discussion.... I think it sounds great ... I‘m very interested

BarbaraBB I read it and liked it. But it is not that old, I think? I thought it was published in 2007. And it does have an entry in the Litsy catalogue: 6y
BarbaraBB Oh and I had to think about you this morning: I am reading a book right now situated on the Irish coast. That‘s where you live isn‘t it? 6y
Cathythoughts @Barbarabb thanks ! I‘ll have another look , it wouldn‘t come up for me earlier 👍🏻 6y

Narrated in the first person by the main character this is such a clever novel. As the tale unfolds you bit by bit begin to feel more and more uncomfortable. Only near the end do you realise you have been deceived. I would recommend all Faulks books.

Andrew65 I want to read some Sebastian Faulks. 7y
MayJasper @Andrew65 Birdsong is very powerful and was my first Sebastian Faulks read. 7y
Andrew65 @Mayjasper Thanks for that information, and I actually own a copy of it and also own a copy of (edited) 7y
MayJasper I loved that one too. 7y
Cathythoughts At the end we are deceived ??! Oh no ! Now you have me thinking ... what does this mean .. and , yes , I will be reading all his novels 👍🏻❤️ 6y

I'm in the Secret History club for favorite book that takes place at a college, but this one is a close second. It's the perfect blend of charming English college snobbery and bone-chilling creepiness.

CaitlinSiem I've never heard of this but you won me over with your description. 8y
