Wrapping up my #weekendread today. I usually can usually tell if a book is a thumbs up or down this far in… but this one is going down to the wire. Just not sure yet.
Just saw that the sequel to Ready Player One is coming out November 24, 2020! It‘s called... wait for it... Ready Player Two! Ha! Can‘t wait.
pickThis book was harsh & ugly & often depressing. But woven throughout is this family struggling against society & each other & history. . . and it was wonderful.There were a few spots I was wondering “what the heck”...but every time the author delivered & I realized what a good writer (with a good editor) can do. I recommend this to folks who enjoy Southern Gothic & magical realism. If you liked Kunzru's "White Tears", you'll like this one. 4/5

“Stories fail if you read them only once.” Hmmm, really? I‘m not a re-reader. So this is a tough idea to accept up front. I‘ve never been interested in going back over land already traveled. But maybe I‘m missing out? I wonder if it‘d be worth the time. . . I‘m still working my way through Orner‘s essays. It‘s slow going, but in the best of ways. Lots to chew on. #booksaboutbooks
pickI‘ve never read Le Guin, but know how prolific she was. I stumbled upon this book & picked it up when I saw the section titled “The Lit Biz”. I may have come for the bookish parts, but it was the essays about her cat Pard & her take on culture & society that make this one memorable. It‘s a collection of her blog posts. I only wish more people wrote blog posts like these. If you like short thoughtful, sometimes sentimental, essays check it out.
