I'm not sure how much this book will cheer me up after reading The Vegetarian, but fingers crossed. 🤞🏽#neilgaiman #chrisriddell #sleepingbeauty #fairytale

Finally getting to this masterpiece, purchased with birthday money. 😎

Mehso-so

My main issue is the uneven writing, like Neil couldn't decide which style he preferred: children's book, stock-standard Gaiman or Yoda-inspired syntax. I know the gods' inconsistencies are addressed in the intro, but it was odd to see Loki go from loveable scamp to cold-blooded killer with little explanation. However, I enjoyed most of the individual stories, and thought the final chapter was beautifully written.

There are so many bad reviews of this book, but I like it. It doesn't sound like she's trying to copy Gabriel García Márquez (which was my biggest problem with House of the Spirits), I'm learning so much about the history of Haiti and Haitian voodoo, and the story is pretty compelling. So no complaints from me.

Nevertheless, she persisted.

Inspired by Yann Martel's The High Mountains of Portugal, I'm reading my very first Agatha Christie.

Libby1 I just finished The High Mountains of Portugal yesterday and started Death on the Nile today! 7y
noellemartine @Libby1 I'm sure this is a thing that regularly happens! How'd you find both books? 7y

I love how Isabel Allende casually and prematurely reveals the devastating conclusions of her various story threads. There are no spoiler alerts here.
