Empty: A Memoir | Susan Burton
7 posts | 7 read | 10 to read
An editor at This American Life reveals the searing story of the secret binge-eating that dominated her adolescence and shapes her still. Growing up, Susan Burton had never heard of binge-eating. She just knew she felt her best when she was empty, "like a straw", as she says "something you could blow through." For almost thirty years, Susan Burton has hidden her obsession with food and the secret life of compulsive eating and starving that dominated her adolescence. This is the relentlessly honest, fiercely intelligent story of living with both anorexia and binge-eating disorder, moving past her shame, and learning to tell her secret. When Burton was thirteen, her stable life in suburban Michigan was turned upside down by her parents' abrupt divorce, and she moved to Colorado with her mother and sister. She seized on this move west as an adventure and an opportunity to reinvent herself from middle-school nerd to popular teenage girl. But she hadn't escaped unscathed, and in the fallout from her parents' breakup, an inherited fixation on thinness went from "peculiarity to pathology." She entered into a painful cycle of anorexia and binge eating that formed a subterranean layer to her sunny life. She went from success to success--she went to Yale, scored a dream job at a magazine right out of college, and married her college boyfriend. But in college the compulsive eating got worse--she'd binge, swear it would be the last time, and then, hours later, do it again--and after she graduated she descended into anorexia, her attempt to "quit food." Binge eating is more prevalent than anorexia or bulimia, but there is less research and little storytelling to help us understand it. In tart, soulful prose Susan Burton strikes a blow for the importance of this kind of story; brings to life an indelible cast of characters; and tells an exhilarating story of longing, compulsion and hard-earned self-revelation.

Author‘s memoir about her struggle with binge eating disorder. In this passage, she talks about what benefit she felt like she got from her #eatingdisorder

Inspiredtoreadwrite There is nothing beneficial about a eating disorder, I know that as a fact because I have experienced different forms of it and still struggling and battling it. Honestly eating disorders shouldn't be glamorized. That the issue in this world glamorizing destructive and sabotaging situations. That my two cents. Needed to vent that. Carry on. 2y
Inspiredtoreadwrite But then again she doesn't exactly find it beneficial....it's just when someone self-destructs and self-sabotage....you think you got it but you don't, you think it's the only way to be but it's not but you can't convince yourself of that because it's the vicious circle of sabotage and destruction. 2y

Sending this back to amazon. I thought it would be interesting, but all it‘s been for 50 pages is her talking about 1-2 lb weight gains and losses. 🥱😴

As a person over 200 lbs, who is perfectly happy with her size, this is incredibly boring. I mean there is absolutely nothing I‘m enjoying about this, and it cost over $20. Total bust!

Megabooks @britt_brooke it got significantly less interesting to me the more I read, but others may find it more relatable. 4y
MicheleinPhilly I put this on hold at the library because I was skeptical about it. 4y
britt_brooke @Megabooks Thanks for the heads up! 4y

BarbaraBB A wise decision I think. Sounds boring. 4y
Megabooks @MicheleinPhilly her writing is good. I just didn‘t fine the content interesting. 4y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB yeah. I just can‘t stand hearing skinny people talk about losing or gaining 1-2 lbs. again, I think a lot of women can relate to those worries. I‘m just not one. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
BarbaraBB Neither am I. Highly frustrating! 4y
Reviewsbylola I can see why that would be annoying. Definitely skipping this one. 4y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola it just went on like that for too long, imo 4y
MicheleinPhilly I‘m 34% in and considering bailing. It‘s so boring. 4y
Megabooks @MicheleinPhilly yes!! Incredibly dull!! 4y
MicheleinPhilly She is no doubt a gifted writer but I have no idea why I should care about a day by day retelling of high school. I‘m willing to give some writers the benefit of the doubt if they seem like interesting people with something new to say but she‘s just this stereotypical, privileged white girl. 4y
Megabooks @MicheleinPhilly when I first got the book, I told Britt in the comments that she had an interesting voice and I was enjoying the writing, but it just quickly devolved into a weight/food log and an “omg, I‘m so fat!! I weight 115 lbs!” As a fat-and-proud person, I find this kind of wheedling skinny into fat boring and insulting. 4y
