I was expecting this to be a light-hearted SNL listen (a la Tina Fey, Colin Jost, etc) but, holy sh*t, some of it is horrifying! I‘m not saying it‘s a bad listen at all, just unexpected from the guy who did SNL‘s Bill Clinton impersonation and Sean “I‘ll take S words for 500” Connery

I really enjoyed this. I wanted to read this after recently seeing a gut-wrenching Netflix documentary about Hammond's life, whose childhood was the stuff of nightmares. This book isn't all doom and gloom though. His stories about working at Saturday Night Live are quite entertaining, and the parts where he describes the process of how he learns to do his impressions are also very interesting.

Hammond was the victim of horrific child abuse.

Holy Christ, this is heartbreaking.

"Honey, I know what you're thinking," she said one day when she saw me pacing the hall with a furrowed brow. "You feel like there's a universal balance sheet, and it ain't balancing in your favor because of things that happened to you and the life you've had to lead. And you want to be paid back. But you ain't getting paid back, and you need to stop thinking that you will."
It was a huge breakthrough for me.

Shaking babies. Hysterical!

I thought it would tell me more about the times he was taken out in the straight jacket and more about his drug life.. It didn't really talk much about his rehab life either but it was really interesting as to who he all met and what he did to get there.. Good read.
