Dolphins at Daybreak | Mary Pope Osborne

Ok....so I decided to give this MF series another try. I have changed my opinion on the Magic Treehouse series. Dolphins at Daybreak tell how Jack and Annie are on a secret mission for Morgan & they must recover an item by solving a riddle. They get to explore the coral reef & meet many underwater friends along the way. Of course they run into trouble. 3rd graders could do a marine animal research project #UCFWALTERSLIT

Brookegamble @jhudson I have heard from many different teachers that the Magic Treehouse series is a must for every classroom! I faintly remember reading them myself in elementary school but I was not too into them. I never thought of using them for a lesson but your link definitely gave me some ideas! #UCFWaltersLit 6y
Seans_h @jhudson I read the magic treehouse books all the time in elementary school. I find that although it is not much of an informative book, it should still be kept in the classroom for those who are not easily interested in reading. The link attached could be very useful in the classroom regarding creating projects/activities. #UCFWaltersLit 6y
lizzie0922 @jhudson I love love this series, I always used to check these out in elementary school. I really like the ideas on the link you provided 6y
marissa.s @jhudson I hear of teachers recommending these books all the time! I used to love these and when I went back to look for my old collection I was so sad to hear my mom had gotten rid of them. I would definitely want these books in my classroom and am keeping an eye out for them in stores! Thanks for sharing the link, I'll make sure to keep it for future reference! #UCFWalterslit 6y

This TL is a great book for shared reading for Kindergarten. The story is silly and fun and teaches children to count while these animals compete to see who can balance the most apples on their heads. You've got math & literature covered with this one. #UCFWALTERSLIT

Brookegamble @jhudson I love this book! Just like you said, reading this aloud with younger kids is a great way for them to hear a fun story while also sneaking a little math in there. It's a great opportunity for them to get a better understanding of number sequence without it being forced. #UCFWaltersLit 6y
Seans_h @jhudson I have never read this book before but it‘s one that will be in my classroom! I think it‘s hard to find books that cover multiple topics and for this one to focus on math and literature is wonderful. I agree that it could also be used in shared reading, and also for partner readings. Wonderful post! #UCFWaltersLit 6y
marissa.s @jhudson I have never heard of this book before! Thanks for sharing because I am definitely going to look it up now and hopefully get it for my younger brother! He loves reading and counting so I'm really excited for this! #UCFWalterslit 6y

This TL is quirky and funny and is told from AJs perspective, who is a student at Ella Mentry School. His class comes up with an idea to create a custom toilet seat after another students Grandma inspires them on Grandparents Day. I could see students participating in an class invention project and tie in math and learn the basics of running a business. www.teacherspayteachers.com #UCFWalterslit

Seans_h @jhudson I can‘t believe you found this book! I read this series when I was a kid and like you said, it‘s very quirky and entertaining for younger children. I absolutely enjoyed this series and although it uses jokes like the ‘Ella Mentry School‘, students should have the opportunity to read in their free time! #UCFWaltersLit 6y
Seans_h @jhudson I also liked your last idea that this book can be a good foundation for teaching student how to run a business or also learn how to count money. #UCFWaltersLit 6y
jhudson @Seans_h This was one of the books I got from the scholastic order. I've never read one from this series before, so I was pleasantly surprised. It was a fun read. 6y
BLYTHE44 @BLYTHE44 #UCFWalterslitMy youngest daughter was crazy about all of these fun books. She couldn't wait to get her hands on the next one after each completed one 6y

This HF is about a young boy named Nate who runs away from his uncle's farm and ends up fighting in the American Revolution. The history provided in this book through the time line set up of each chapter would work nicely with a K-W-L chart and guided reading. I would suggest this boom for 5th-6th grade. www.scholastic.com #UCFWalterslit

Brittney3 @jhudson I️ remember reading this series of books in elementary back when I️ loved history! I️ was always so into them. I agree it would work well with a kwl chart. 6y

We March | Shane Evans

This HF is simple but powerful. First graders would be the perfect target group to teach about protesting and activism. It ends with a photo of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr taking his place at the podium. After reading this book, I would have the students write their own speech on something they would like to change. scholastic.com/teachers/books/we-march #UCFWalterslit

Erica.rivera @jhudson I really like the idea that you have in mind for the students. I wouldn't have thought about having them write their own speeches! That great to know. This book looks interesting and meaningful for the students. (edited) 6y

Freckle Juice | Judy Blume

This RF made me remember how much I love Judy Blume. Andrew wants freckles so badly just like his friend Nicky. When another classmate offers to sell him a recipe for freckles, the laughs begin. Character mapping would be perfect for 1st or 2nd graders with this selection. storyboardthat.com/teacher-guide/freckle-juice-by-judy-blume #UCFWalterslit

Who Was Walt Disney? | Whitney Stewart
post image

This biography was fun to read. It tells of Walt's struggles & successes. The author ties in historical events too, like the Great Depression, and takes time to explain it as well. A Time Line activity would be fun for 3rd-4th grade. They can do a time line about their own lives & reference current & historical events. teacherspayteachers.com/waltdisney-timeline.com #UCFWalterslit

Erica.rivera @jhudson I would love to read this book! I love Walt Disney and his life is very fascinating. This is a great choice for an biography and a great person to talk about ! Thanks for the time line as well! I will definitely be having this book in my classroom! (edited) 6y

This NF book is great for early readers. The pictures are real life and the text is relatively easy. This book explains why, how and where honeybees use pollen. You could tie in science and geography with this book as your class explores where pollen levels are high. www.scholastic.com #UCFWalterslit

What a feel good RF. This book tells how a run down neighborhood becomes a community and family. A brave little girl wanting to honor her father's memory plants some beans and unknowingly starts a garden of hope for many. A class science project (planting seeds) would be a great way to tie in this book bookrags.com/lessonplan/seedfolks #UCFWalterslit

CWalters Did you read this book? 7y
jhudson @CWalters I did read this in RED3012. I was very intrigued by this book. 7y
CWalters Awesome! Yes, it really goes beyond the idea of building a class garden and speaks to the need for cultural responsiveness and acceptance. Beautiful book that I believe is very relevant at this time!! 7y

I'm not sure how I feel about this Modern Fantasy. Sure the concept of the book is cute a tree house that magically takes you to the land of dinosaurs.....totally cool for a child. I just don't think this would be my first choice or recommendation. Perhaps you could use it as a fun way to introduce a unit on Dinosaurs lessonplanet.com/teachers/dinosaurs-before-dark-1st-5th #UCFWalterslit

CWalters I'm hoping you'll receive replies from classmates on the many reasons why this series is so popular. 7y
TanishaRosa I haven't read any books from this series, but I agree it could be used to introduce a topic for the Engage part of a lesson. I might read one to see if I understand it's popularity. Your resource includes some helpful instructional ideas; I like the suggestion of comparing it with a nother book in the series. 6y

This RF is my new favorite read. Auggie is a middle school kid trying to fit in but the kids at his school can't see past his disfigurement. He's wise beyond his years, funny and an inspiration. You will not want to put down this book once you start. As you near the end, you find yourself not wanting it to end. This would be a great Readers Theater pick for engaging students. varsitytutors.com/englishteachers/palacio #UCFWalterslit

CWalters #ucfwalterslit Wahoo! I agree about the tissues!! Be sure you include all requirements of the posting such as a website link (see checklist). 7y
Erica.rivera This book is absolutely amazing. I loved how the author includes everyone into the book and not just one character. August is an amazing character who is strong and never gives up. Teaching kids that it's okay to be different and being able to show off they're knowledge one step at a time! 7y

Shared this poem for poetry cafe night in class. It's light hearted, fun and always makes my son & I laugh #UCFWalterslit

Erica.rivera @jhudson This is such a cute and creative poem! I pictured every thing that was mentioned through out the poem! Great pick! (edited) 7y
CWalters #UCFWalterslit We need playful poems like this to share with our students. I agree with Erica, I was able to form mental images while you shared during our Poetry Cafe. 7y
TanishaRosa This is a fun poem that many kids would enjoy. I also think it's easy to provide visuals from the text for the ELs; maybe even tape the illustrations on the board in the order they are mentioned so they can easily picture it too. 6y
