Odessa Again | Dana Reinhardt
post image

Odessa Again is a SF book. It's about a girl who discovers the attic of her new house has a loose floorboard that allows her to travel through time back 24hrs. Each time she can travel 1 less hour (24, then 23, then 22, etc.) She uses that "power" to try and fix embarassing moments, mistakes, and even her parent's marriage. It includes topics like divorce, family, friendship, fitting-in, etc. #UCFWaltersLit

TanishaRosa I also liked the way the topic of divorce was presented; it had a realistic yet optimistic resolution. I would use this book to introduce a "travel through time" history lesson. http://www.educationworld.com/a_tsl/archives/05-1/lesson034.shtml 6y
Erica.rivera @tanishaRosa This books seems really interesting ! I love books that go back in time like this one. This looks like something a middle school student would read because of the embarrassing moments. I really would consider reading this book! Very interesting. (edited) 6y

Pickpick

This is a book that contains various fairy tales including the TL Beauty and the Beast. I was surprised to read that the Beast takes the father as a prisoner, and when the Beast offers to free him in exchange for his daughter, the father accepts! The classic story is a bit different from Disney's adaptation... #UCFWaltersLit

This book is MF. I like that the characters in the story are learning as they go through their adventure in ancient Egypt. Here they learn about egyptians, hieroglyphs, pyramids, & more. This is the 1st book I've read from the series; I liked the story and how it was written. I would have these books in my classroom. #UCFWaltersLit

jhudson I'm starting to change my opinion towards this series. Reading them to my son and seeing his reaction is making me understand why they are so popular. 6y
MissMorganSlavik Love this series. Read them myself in grade school and will definitely have in my library. 6y
marissa.s @TanishaRosa This series is great for young children. I can remember reading any of 'The Magic Tree House' books I could get my hands on, and I loved them! This series is a must have and I actually just got one from Ms. Walters that I was planning on reading over break. Thanks for sharing! #UCFWalterslit 6y

Bicycles | George Coulter, Shirley Coulter
post image
Pickpick

This is a nonfiction. This book is all about bicycles: types, parts, safety, & care. I'd use this with a 5th grade class directing the students to read only chapter 3 "On the Move" that talks about how the bike turns leg power into speed & motion and explains the parts of the bike that make this happen. Then I would show this video to introduce Newton's laws. #UCFWaltersLit

Henry's Freedom Box | Ellen Levine
post image

Henry's Freedom Box is a historical fiction. Henry and his family are slaves; he belongs to one master and his wife to another. One day his wife and three kids are sold, and Henry becomes devastated. There was nothing he could do to get them back, so he decides to ship himself to a place where there are no slaves and he can be free. #UCFWaltersLit

Erica.rivera @TanishaRosa This book is really touching. When hearing it in the read aloud for the first time it touched me emotionally. The struggle Henry had to face when his family was taken away was heartbreaking. Not only was it heartbreak it gave a message of him escaping the slave life to being free. Great book choice ! The Three Little Pigs | Eileen Grace
post image

The Three Little Pigs is a traditional story. It's about 3 pigs that move out from their mom's home and must each build their own. One uses straw, another sticks, and the other bricks. The strength of their houses is tested by the huffs & puffs of the bad wolf. I'll be using this book in my SCE class to introduce a wind force lesson. The link includes cross curricular connections. #UCFWaltersLit

Kirsten.Pacheco I love how you implemented this classic book into a science (wind force) lesson! I think it would be neat to have them build their own houses in small groups using 3 different materials to see which would hold up best. Awesome! 7y
MissMorganSlavik I agree with Kirsten! Great idea! Thanks for sharing :) 6y
marissa.s @TanishaRosa I love the story of the 3 Little Pigs and I love how this is like the original version. There are so many different versions of the book and I really do love reading them all. I also love how you included this in a science lesson, which was really good by the way! Thanks for sharing! #UCFWalterslit 6y

Stargirl | Jerry Spinelli
post image

This is a RF book. Stargirl has been homeschooled until now-10th grade; she's unique and isn't afraid to let Mica High see that. She doesn't care for social circles; she's more concerned with being happy and making others happy. Leo's intrigued by Stargirl but struggles with the idea of losing his friends by befriending "the strange new girl." #UCFWaltersLit

My pick for poetry café was "Risk" by Anais Nin. I loved how this author captured so much emotion in a single stanza. #UCFWaltersLit
