J.K. Rowling changed the world with this SF book that could be used as a LC in classrooms. The first of the series is about a boy named Harry Potter who learns that he is a wizard. From that point on begins a journey he never could have imagined from magical spells, moving pictures, and mystical creatures. Rowling truly captivates the Wizarding World that everyone loves today. HP is such a global phenomenon and it is highly recommended to have

alyssahp this book and the rest of the series in a classroom library. A truly astonishing resource to use for the HP world is https://www.pottermore.com. Through this resource, UDL 7.1 & EL 29 are met because it is a great reference to use for a variety of things and the student's interest. There are interactive games/quizzes, discussion questions, and anything else you could possibly want to know all embedded in this one website. #ucflae3414f17 6y
DrSpalding Potter more is such an amazing website. Follow them on Twitter and you will see updates and additions consistently. 6y

Paul O. Zelinksky won a 1987 Caldecott for retelling and illustrating one of my favorite TL stories. This book, best RA, is about a miller's daughter who makes a deal with Rumplestiltskin and the only way she is free is if she can guess his name. http://users.manchester.edu/Student/WKStarnes/ProfWeb/C6%20-%20StarnesWKEDUC340L... is a great resource to help students focus on descriptive writing. UDL 2.3 &

alyssahp EL 30 are met by using graphic organizers as visual aids to support and decode the text. This website goes in depth of a lesson plan and what a teacher can do with the book. One thing I really liked that was included was the accommodations of different students. #ucflae3414f17 6y
DrSpalding This is an excellent version of this traditional literature piece. Having resources that include accommodations is so helpful. Good choice. Nice EL/UDL alignment. 6y

First the Egg | Laura Vaccaro Seeger
post image
Pickpick

This 2008 Geisel Award Winning NF book by Laura Vaccaro Seeger is great for a RA. It is a great book for students to learn where things came from and what they will become. It is a great book to teach sequencing and
http://wiseowlcathy.blogspot.com/2017/04/first-the-egg-sequencing-mentor-texts-C... is a great resource to extend on. EL 44 which deals with thinkong skills, in this case sequence, and UDL 3.2 which highlights patterns and

alyssahp big ideas, are both met in regards to this resource. The resource not only has a sequence activity, but also has an audio RA which is great to use as well. #ucflae3414f17 6y
Jbombardiere I‘m glad you incorporated an audio read aloud to go with the assignment, it‘s always nice to have that option as well! 6y
DrSpalding Audiobooks are excellent for all students especially emergent readers. Second language learners, visually impaired and below level readers benefit from this option. 6y

The Giver | Lois Lowry
post image
Pickpick

Lois Lowry won a 1994 Newberry for this great SF novel that can be used as a LC. The book follows a 12 year old boy name Jonas. In the society many things are eliminated and forgotten so that everyone is the same and all is equal. Everyone has a role in their community and Jonas becomes the next "Receiver of Memory", which is someone who is the sole keeper of all the memories. Jonas must learn how to deal with all these new things that he never

alyssahp knew before. Will he do his job and hide the memories or does he dare to escape the conformed community? Read the book and/or watch the movie and you may just find out. A great resource to use for this novel is https://www.lake.k12.fl.us/cms/lib/FL01000799/Centricity/Domain/8288/book%20proj...
UDL 2.5, illustrate through multiple media, & EL 44, focus on thinking skills, are both met having the students
6y
alyssahp compare/contrast the book version and movie version of The Giver. #ucflae3414f17 6y

Wonder. R.J. Palacio | R J Palacio
post image
Pickpick

R.J. Palacio has blown me away with this astonishing RF, New York Times Best Seller, novel used as an LC/IR. It centers around a young boy who was born with a facial difference and all the struggles he is faced with at an actual school. He has been home schooled his whole life and is now the new kid that everybody seems to be talking about. It is an incredibly moving and funny, at times, story that I definitely think young kids should read and be

alyssahp aware of. I came across this resource,
http://www.samanthagreenmysteries.com/system/resources/BAhbBlsHOgZmSSI8MjAxMy8xM..., that I think is great for this book. There are many different activities that students can do such as response questions, making their own precepts (like in the book), or even journal ideas. UDL 7.2 & EL 6 are met by
6y
alyssahp this resource because a teacher can continually monitor a students' comprehension and it teaches them the value and authenticity behind it. This book has become one of my favorites and is HIGHLY recommended! #ucflae3414f17 6y
AmandaHuskey I love this book! I made my mom buy the book to read it too! Great job with finding this activity! 6y

The Lorax | Dr. Seuss

Master of silly rhymes and unique illustrations, Dr. Seuss created this amazing F (often described as a Fable through TL), best RA, book to teach children about the environment. The Lorax speaks for the trees and tries to defend them against the Once-ler. The Lorax has so many great activities for children to do. A great resource is http://www.seussville.com/activities/Lorax14_EarthDayEduKit_Bklt_WEB.pdf. Both UDL 7.2 & EL 46 is met via the

alyssahp resource by giving the students a hands on experience and truly showing them how important the environment is. #ucflae3414f17 6y
MorganH I love this book, and it can teach kids to respect nature around them 6y
Nataliea.escobar You can never go wrong with dr seuss! Always has great books 6y
amandagrant A classic. An important theme of caring for the planet. Love it! 6y

Toni Buzzeo and David Small teamed up for this funny F Caldecott Winner that should be RA. Elliot is a very rich and proper boy who decides he wants to bring a penguin home after an aquarium trip with his father. Being polite, of course, he asks his father and his father agrees, thinking he meant a stuffed animal. The journey then begins of the boy and penguin's kinship. Via https://www.crayola.com/lesson-plans/one-cool-friend-lesson-plan/ UDL 1.1

alyssahp and EL 16 are great principles met using the activities provided by Crayola. Students can either write or draw what animal they would bring home and how they would adapt their home for it. #ucflae3414f17 7y
AJones You have a beautiful cat. 🐈 Thanks for sharing this book, I just added it to my stack. 6y

John Green received the 2013 Odyssey Award for this RF novel that could be used as an IR or LC. In this story, Hazel Grace has lung cancer and goes to a support group where she meets a boy. At the moment begins their story of love, laughter, heartbreak and so much more. This book is relatable in so many ways and has great life lessons. I think it would be a great book to integrate within a classroom. A great resource for this novel is

alyssahp http://www.penguin.com/static/images/yr/pdf/JohnGreen_Guide_june_2014.pdf (starting on pg. 15) because it provides great strategies such as questions for the students to think about, comparisons, and even evaluating certain parts of the book. UDL 2.3 & EL 36 are both met simply because of these activities and what they require students to do such as decoding & higher level of thinking. It also provides Common Core Standards which is great and 7y
alyssahp always important when teaching. #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 7y

Diary of a Young Girl | Anne Frank
post image
Pickpick

This B by Anne Frank, which was later edited by her father Otto H. Frank, is a great book to use as an IR or LC. Anne Frank's diary was found in an attic where she and her family spent their last few years. It shows the horrible times during Nazi Germany and what people went through. This book gives insight of vivid memories and days that Anne Frank went through. A great resource to use for this is http://teacher.scholastic.com/frank/tguide.htm

alyssahp because it has many lessons that can be used. One I thought that was a really good idea, was making a timeline of all the events throughout the story. Both UDL 3.2 & EL 9 are met because students can use and make timelines to highlight critical moments/events throughout the book. This is a great book for students to read to get a more in depth understanding of people's lives during that horrific time period. #ucflae3414f17 7y
brittanyg I love how creative you have become with your pictures. It‘s an eye grabber and made me intrigued to read about it. 7y

Tanya Lee Stone won the 2010 Sibert Award for this amazing NF book, that could be used as an IR. In 1958, there was an unspoken rule: astronauts were male AND white. This book is about 13 women who striped to prove everyone wrong and even challenge the government. This book is a truly inspirational one and a great book to have in the classroom.
http://www.tanyastone.com/assets/files/AA%20Reading%20Guide.pdf includes many great resources like

alyssahp comprehensive questions and activities on specific subjects. It also includes standards as well. Both UDL 45 & EL 8.2 are met through the Social Studies project by having students use multiple resources of research that were used in the 50's and 60's then creating a venn diagram to compare what they found. A bit of a side note, but I made a text-to-text connection with Hidden Figures! #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 7y

The poems and illustrations of this P book, which can be used as CR, are done by the amazing Shel Silverstein. This is a great book to use when learning about poetry because there are so many. As a group, the whole class can read a poem aloud from the book. They are very short. The students can then analyze and decode the meaning of the text as well as identify poetry structures. A great resource to use for that, which can be found on pg. 7, is

alyssahp http://www.shelsilverstein.com/media/learning/resource_files/Giving_Tree_Anniver.... It also provides activities for his other books as well. UDL 2.2 & EL 12 would definitely met because you are teaching two things at once, both poetry structure and the content involved. #ucflae3414f17 7y

She Persisted | Chelsea Clinton
post image
Pickpick

Chelsea Clinton wrote an inspiring NF book that could be used as a SR. It is about 13 women who were told they couldn‘t do certain things but each of them PERSISTED! These women have changed the world. Throughout the description of each woman, somewhere it will say “she persisted." While reading, you can point to the children and they can all say “she persisted” when it comes up in the book. You could even choose some students to read a page.

alyssahp http://www.booknerdmommy.com/persisted-mini-biography-activity-idea/ is a great resource because it allows the students to further their knowledge on influential women or using the other activity, they can write and draw a mini biography about themselves. UDL 9.3 & EL 16 both are met by using the resource to write, draw, and share their biography of either themselves or an influential woman they chose. Their results will show if they truly 7y
alyssahp learned what a biography is and if they used it correctly. #ucflae3414f17 7y
DrSpalding Love, love, love! Great image for such a powerful book. To have the students create their own minibiographies helps them make a text to self connection. 7y

A 2014 Charlotte Zolotow Award winner of this RF book, Lemony Snicket tells a story, best RA, about a boy named Laszlo who stops being afraid of the dark. https://www.islma.org/Monarch-2016-files/islma/Dark.pdf has great activities to use as well as many B,D,A questions. UDL 3.2 & EL 45 are both met because it focuses on the main idea of being afraid of the dark as well as doing an activity of comparing/contrasting either of another book listed

alyssahp on the resource or just comparing the main characters feelings and or experiences to their own. #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 7y

Best RA, Doreen Cronin worked with Betsy Lewin to create a great F which was New York Times Best Illustrated Book in 2004. Duck is back with all the other animals but this time, he is sick of Farmer Brown's rules and holds an election to be in charge of the farm. He keeps having different elections until he moves all the way up to presidency. A resource that gives a lot of great activities to do in relation to the text is

alyssahp https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/duck-president.... UDL 2.5 illustrating through multiple media & EL 29 using a variety of reference materials are both great ways to expand the text by using real world elections and presidents as examples. #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 7y

Potentially used as an IR, Sharon Draper did such an amazing job with this RF novel that it won 2012 Sunshine State Young Readers Award. In this book, we get an insight of what life is like for Melody Brooks who has cerebral palsy. She is extremely intelligent but no one knows it. If she is given the chance to be able to connect & communicate her thoughts, will people finally accept her? The novel explores many different elements that some of us

alyssahp even struggle with today such as acceptance and inclusion. Teachers can use
http://sharondraper.com/bookdetail.asp?id=35 as a resource and guideline to ask students questions about the book and what they have read. UDL 2.3 & EL 36 integrate thinking and comprehension by asking students questions on the text either through homework assignments or quiz/tests. #ucflae3414f17

This book by Adam Rex is a relatable F RA created with the help of illustrator Christian Robinson. It's the first day of school and everyone is nervous about how it will go, including the school itself! Just as we all felt, school doesn't know what to expect on the first day. After a few setbacks, it soon finds out that it's not the only one with first day jitters! This is a great book to read, of course, on the first day. It helps let children

alyssahp know they are not alone and it is fun to see that even the school was nervous! https://us.macmillan.com/schoolsfirstdayofschool/adamrex/9781596439641/ is great because UDL 3.2 & EL 30 is met by understanding the big ideas and drawing aids to prove so.

Jon Scieska and illustrator Lane Smith retell a great F classic that we think we know the whole story to. It is a great story that would be fun for students to do as a DR. What really happened in The 3 Little Pigs? Well A. Wolf will tell you! Through this funny retelling, A. Wolf tells his side of the story that is TRUE in his eyes. There are many great activities to use for this story, but one that students would enjoy doing is a reenactment

alyssahp of both the well known story and the new one. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/true-story-3-l... has a great activity for this under Act it Out.
