Why Am I Here? | Constance rbeck-Nilssen

#NewYearNewBooks Day 16: One of the most profound picturebooks on #Refugees and asks this question: “What if I had to move from place to place? And the only things I could keep were what I was able to carry with me. What would it be like to live like that?” This is one story that pushes the envelope just a tad further, as international picturebook titles from Norway usually do.

The World in Depression, 1929-1939: Revised and Enlarged Edition | Charles P. Kindleberger, Ford International Professor of Economics Charles P Kindleberger

Mehso-so

After reading “Trust“ by Hernan Diaz, I wanted to know more about the time of the Depression. But I should've chosen my book more carefully, so my rating is a personal one and for the right person this book might be filled with insights and information. This is an economical view only regarding this time, so there is no picture of how people were affected or how they came by. Most of the things I read I didn't even understand...

Excellent history. Presents the new and the known in an exciting and illuminating way. French brings together various economic and historical strands to tell a far more comprehensive story of Africa and Africans in the creation of the modern world. A must read!

#FaceOnCover #MayMontage I had a mini version of this coffee table book in the 90s, and flipped through the portraits until the binding disintegrated. Like most people at the time, I was captivated by “Afghan Girl” and her striking green eyes, but even more than the 1984 National Geographic cover shot which was used for the cover of this Phaidon collection (left) I remember the controversy surrounding the photo in the 90s.👇🏼

IndoorDame It came out McCurry didn‘t know who she was, and he went back several times to look for her. He finally found her identity in 2002 and took a second series of photos (right) that stuck with me even more strongly. 11mo

I enjoyed learning about the key technologies that enabled civilization throughout the ages. I also got an answer to a long-held question of mine, which is why the Northern Hemisphere is in a much better place than the Southern: because of the “lucky latitudes.“
