Vansa Oh MY GOD. Such a throwback. I used to be obsessed with these....frankly pretty awful books😂😂I remember this book so well! I remember Tricia's death and Stevens reaction being handled unexpectedly very sensitively, and had me in tears throughout. I guess that's why one kept reading these books, they had the potential to surprise you with sensitivity! 3d
johncadams @Vansa I love reviewing vintage children's books because I so often get this response! 2d

Yes, friends, I‘m staying near a Liquor Mart with a stellar selection of local beers. I shall drink one a day until my money runs out, or I get tired of beer.

Todays selection is from Bookstore Brewing (best name or best name?) and it was DELICIOUS. I maybe drank it too quickly while I read the first couple chapters of Sweet Valley #12, which I expect will be as awful-yet-entertaining as the first 11, possibly with a side of Real Emotions.

Lindy Coffee cream ale… sounds yum. 🍻 5d
xicanti @Lindy I‘d definitely drink it again! It went down easy. 5d

It‘s Hour 14, and sweet little Allie‘s helping me through this Teen Issues throwback. Is it a PSA about how motorcycles are awful, or is it a PSA about how you should always drive safe and obey the rules of the road? I‘ll find out soon because it ain‘t gonna take me long to finish. #deweyoct #readathon

Can't Stay Away | Francine Pascal

On Episode 214 of my book podcast, author Elissa Sussman and I go back to Sweet Valley…. but it‘s nothing like I remembered! CAN‘T STAY AWAY is the first installment in the SVH Senior Year spin-off series, which is grittier and sassier than the pastel paperbacks you used to check out from the library. 💋 Tune in at the link in my bio!

McDonald‘s tourism + Sweet Valley this morning. This book was totally a filler episode, but I‘m still enjoying the series as a cultural artifact. Sometimes it‘s suuuuuper cringey and sometimes it‘s an obvious precursor to those late 90s/early 2000s hour-long dramas where each episode came with an Important Life Lesson (as opposed to the ones where everyone just schemes and torments each other, which it also resembles).

Mehso-so

I‘m torn between a so-so and a pan on this one. There were some serious issues with the behavior of one of the characters, and I think this book really sends a bad message about what sort of behavior is acceptable. Basically, it reads like a high school soap opera. It was marginally entertaining, but there was so much drama. I was glad when it was over.

Double Love | Francine Pascal

I never read the Sweet Valley High books when I was a kid, so when a friend told me the 12-book omnibus was on sale for $2 I figured I‘d fill a gap. 11-year-old Me would‘ve hated the first book so, so, much, but Adult Me‘s having a surprisingly fun time with all its dodgy ridiculousness. Go figure.

Broken Hearted | Francine Pascal, Kate William

Team Todd or Team Jeffrey? That‘s really the dilemma of this whole book. Elizabeth as a character needs a shakeup, so Todd Wilkins moves back to Sweet Valley. Some folks will commiserate with her dilemma, and others will think her conflicts to be very out of character. 3 star rating for me on Goodreads.
Which team are you on? 😉

Teacher Crush | Francine Pascal, Kate William

Mehso-so

This was definitely not my fav SVH read. I know I had crushes on teachers as a teenager, but rereading as an adult just made me feel creepy. Some of the SVH books have aged better than others, and IMO, this one did not.
