Do you have a favorite series of books or stack of books that just make you happy by a mere glance at them? My vintage Nancy Drews do that for me. Tell me about your happy books. I'd love to discover some new ones.

batsy ? Have you read the Dana Girls mysteries, also by the "Carolyn Keene" team? I have a handful of my sisters' copies that I've hung on to. 2y
Jess_Read_This @batsy I just got my first copy of a Dana Girls book! The same lady who sold me a few of the nice dj Nancy Drews had one. I couldn't pass it up. I'm kind of excited to compare the two series. 😄I was going to start it this week. 2y
KellyK Love Nancy Drew, girl detective! ❤️ 2y

Tamra Not a series, but I love seeing Edith Wharton, Willa Cather, Maria Sandoz, Patrick Suskind, & other favorite authors all together on shelves. (edited) 2y
Jess_Read_This @KellyK She's just the best! 2y
Jess_Read_This @Tamra ❤️I'm going to have to check out Maria Sandoz and Patrick Suskind. I am not familiar with either author. I haven't read Edith Wharton yet either. 😬 2y
Tamra @Jess_Read_This in my wheelhouse, not necessarily for everyone! 😁 Suskind is not prolific and two are creepy - perfect for Halloween. Perfume & The Pigeon. One short story has a scene with a “booger” on the piano keys at a lesson that my husband and I laughed at with tears rolling & gut aching. 2y
robinb ❤️ Nancy Drew! A current favorite series is the Bess Crawford series (Charles Todd). Also love the Sebastian St. Cyr series (C. S. Harris). Both are historical mystery sets. 2y
AmyG I love your vintage Nancy Drew books! 2y
Jess_Read_This @robinb I've been meaning to read Bess Crawford for so long! I LOVE the St Cyr series. Hands down one of my favorites. Did you see C.S. Harris posted the new cover for Why Kill The Innocent?? It's in black and white; it looks super cool. 2y
Jess_Read_This @AmyG Thank you! It's become a new collecting obsession for me. I just love the artwork in the original books. 2y
Jess_Read_This @Tamra Lol!! I just laughed at the idea of a short story having that scene. I'm now for sure going to check Suskind out. 2y
robinb @Jess_Read_This oh wow, I love that cover!! And can‘t wait for it to come out...just wish there wasn‘t such a lag between books. I think you‘ll enjoy Bess! 2y
readinginthedark If you‘re talking about series I read when young, Little House on the Prairie, Boxcar Children, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Chronicles of Prydain! 2y
wanderlustforwords My Virginia Woolf collection is my favorite!!! 2y
Jess_Read_This @readinginthedark Narnia and the Boxcar Children make me happy too!! I just got my Boxcar paperbacks from when I was kid from my mom and took a trip down memory lane. 2y
Jess_Read_This @wanderlustforwords I think I've seen a few you posted and they are gorgeous. 2y
readinginthedark I should really reread them. I bet my son would love those! 2y
Jess_Read_This @readinginthedark it's been a lot of fun rereading these. Especially reading the original text vs. the revised text. 2y

🔦🛎This original text is really good. For some reason the escapades seem a tad more dangerous. The dialogue gets cheesy at times and Ned a little patriarchal sounding... but it's authentic to when it was written and I am loving it.

🔍She's timeless. My small collection of Nancy Drew editions in this title from 1930, 1959, and circa 1979. She's always a brilliant sleuth #TimeAfterTime.

Jess_Read_This @Cinfhen @I-read-and-eat @batsy @rubyslippersreads 💕☺️Thank you so much for the kind words! The watches in the pic are my deceased grandpa's watches and I wanted to include them too. He helped foster my love of reading when I was child. (edited) 2y
I-read-and-eat @Jess_Read_This That makes the photo all the more beautiful 💕 2y
batsy @Jess_Read_This That's lovely ❤️ 2y
AmyG I have some old Nancy Drew books that I foun at our recycling center. I love these! 2y
Jess_Read_This @AmyG ❤️Bless you for rescuing them! I'd love to see a pic too. I just started getting into collecting and reading up on the history of the series last month. So I always love seeing various editions. 2y
merelybookish So fun! Love the different covers. 2y
AmyG @Jess_Read_This I was just thinking that I need to post my books. I will do that after my coffee. ;) And yes....I had to rescue them! 2y
charissharpe What a fab collection! I used to love Nancy Drew. 2y
Jess_Read_This @conversationswithcharis She's a favorite. I started collecting the original books to compare with the ones I read as a child. The originals are longer and not edited in their content like the later ones are. 2y
charissharpe Ohhh I didn't know that, I bet they're better to read as an adult then? (The originals) 2y
Jess_Read_This @conversationswithcharis I was wondering the same thing- how would the originals look with adult eyes? (edited) 2y
mrozzz So cool!!! 2y
MaleficentBookDragon I started collecting the older ones too. Mine range from 1930s to 1960s. I'm very excited when I find a new one. 2y
emilyhaldi Amazing!!! Makes me want to give Nancy Drew a try again 😄 2y
Jess_Read_This @MaleficentBookDragon Oh so cool! I feel the same excitement when I find one too. I'd love to see your collection! 2y
Jess_Read_This @emilyhaldi Do it!! We can compare notes on what we think of the originals! 2y
elkeo_TheBookDragon Gorgeous photo 💕All 3 covers are amazing💕 2y
Jess_Read_This @elkeo Thank you! ❤️I love my Nancy Drews. 2y

🖋🔍🔦Total #IndependentWoman! She drives a blue sports car, has a boyfriend that she seems to use as an accessory, two stellar girlfriends, and always saves the day.

#AugustGrrl #NancyDrew #Sleuth #Mystery

Cinfhen Go Grrrrl 😍 2y
JazzFeathers Is using a boyfriend as an accessory a sign of indipendence, you think? 🤔 2y
Jess_Read_This @JazzFeathers Saying it partly in jest, it is interesting that he doesn't factor heavily into the stories. He is in a few but the vast majority of the books seem have him present in the beginning of the story as a nod to their relationship status, then she jets off without him- which to me speaks of independence. I'm speaking from the revised books the syndicate wrote not the original ones- I just started collecting the originals to compare. 2y
See All 8 Comments
Jess_Read_This @JazzFeathers I guess I forgot to add, my personal opinion is that she is a crummy girlfriend. I always thought that, even as a kid. But in the sense of the word independence... She would seem to be so if he was her accessory. I don't agree with it nor celebrate treating a significant other in that manner. I always just found it interesting how he was there but her girlfriends seem to get more booktime than he does. 2y
JazzFeathers @Jess_Read_This lt would be interesting to see how the old stories compare to the new ones. I don't particularly like how female independence is treated today in many YA novels, as if being an independent woman meant being a jerk. Caring for someone and sharing our lives isn't necessarily about forsaking our freedom. Beside, life asks us to take decisions about this all the time. Suggesting that not caring is independence is plaid wrong in my book 2y
Jess_Read_This @JazzFeathers For sure! And this is the message that is being sent to young ladies who see their favorite female leads as admirable and having characteristics they might like to see in themselves. This message is broader than just books. It seems to be a pervasive theme in our culture in television, music, and movies. I'm not sure if she didn't care about him, per se. He just wasn't as important to her as she was to him. Which still isn't great. (edited) 2y

rubyslippersreads Great vintage set! 🔎 2y
Jaimelire ♥️ 2y
Jess_Read_This @rubyslippersreads Thank you! I just started piecing it together! I really want to read the early ones that haven't been revised! 2y

twohectobooks Wish I could like this a million times! I want to get my hands on those early original versions too!! 2y
Jess_Read_This @twohectobooks It's been a hunt! So many sellers over price them. I wish they would do their research on rare vs scarce vs not as uncommon as you'd think! I've started educating myself on the different editions/years so I can be a smarter buyer as I definitely over paid in two of these... 🤦🏽‍♀️ 2y
Smangela 😍😍😍 2y
elkeo_TheBookDragon This photo makes me happy - such lovely old editions! 2y
Jess_Read_This @elkeo I had the same reaction the first time I saw one of these editions! This was my fav series as a kid. When I found out the ones I read were revised and slightly more tame than the originals. I started searching for the originals so I can see what I missed out on! 2y
