The Work | Bri Lee

Well, that wasn‘t boring! 😧 It probably shouldn‘t surprise me that Bri Lee‘s foray into fiction is full-on.
Two ambitious young things on opposite sides of the globe get it on amidst the New York art scene.
Contemporary ethical issues abound as do evocative sex scenes. Lee did some things well and other things quite clunkily. The ending was disappointing.
A wild ride & all I can say is… strap yourself in! #ozfiction

LeeRHarry Nice review - still intrigued 😊 2d
CarolynM Sounds as though you liked it more than the Age reviewer. I‘ll keep it in the “maybe” basket for now. 2d
MrsMalaprop @CarolynM @LeeRHarry I did like it. I was engaged and felt propelled through it. However there were lots of faults that some may find too grating. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2d

Dalton really knows how to pull on your heart strings, even if most of the plot is far fetched.
I do feel like he romanticises homelessness and the writing is let down by him trying to include too many facts about these issues so therefore it comes across as not genuine conversation. #Ozfiction ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
It will make another great tv series, and I couldn‘t help but think that‘s exactly what he was thinking when he mentions Nicole Kidman etc

Starting on this one today. Went to see Bri speak about her debut novel last night. I have read two of her non-fiction books. Eggshell Skull is my favourite. #currentlyreading #ozfiction

CarolynM There was a really snarky review of this and also Louise Milligan‘s novel in the Age on the weekend. It made me wonder whether they are both bad (I knew @Jeg didn‘t like the Milligan) or if the reviewer‘s envy was showing. I look forward to seeing what you think of this one. 1w
LeeRHarry Have this on hold at the library - looking forward to your thoughts. 😊 1w
MrsMalaprop @CarolynM The ‘flavour‘ of a few reviews put me off a little, and made me decide not to choose it for book club. I will be sure to post a review when I‘m done @LeeRHarry. And I don‘t think it will take be long to finish as it‘s quite pacy! 1w
Jeg Will be interested to see what you think of this. I love her nonfiction. Louise Milligans was a disappointment and I do love her nonfiction. 1w

I enjoyed this one a lot. A twisty murder mystery with an interesting cast of characters who all turned out to be not quite what they seemed. I didn‘t expect anything about the resolution, and I must have missed something because there was one aspect of it I still don‘t understand🤔 🤷🏻‍♀️ I realised part way through that I had read the author‘s debut, Greenlight, and didn‘t like it much. He‘s obviously improved 😆 #ozfiction

LeahBergen Oh, I have this one waiting for me. I must get to it! 2w
CarolynM @LeahBergen It‘s fun. Enjoy! 2w
LeeRHarry I just put this one on my library holds list earlier today! Didn‘t know the author was an Aussie though. 😊 2w
squirrelbrain I‘m waiting for this on BorrowBox, for #readingoceania24. 2w
Tamra Sounds fun! I‘d like to listen to it. 2w

Allegra in Three Parts | Suzanne Daniel

This month‘s Bookclub read was debut #YA #ozfiction & I loved it. Allegra lives with her grandma & her other grandma lives next door. They adore Allegra, but hate each other. Set in the 1970s, it explores the feminist movement of the time, particularly the emergence of ‘safe houses‘ for women & children escaping domestic violence.
It wasn‘t perfect and one character in particular felt like a caricature, but overall this was a very enjoyable read.

Stories like this one, told by a Goorie author about our colonial history are so important. I was deeply moved by the end. 🖤💛❤️ #Ozfiction

This is a very serious book, which would usually put me off, but I read it in one sitting & I‘m going to be thinking about it for a while. The narrative switches between the experiences of Helen, an Australian at Cambridge in 1992 doing PhD on Joseph Conrad, & episodes from Conrad‘s life & work. I think it is, in part, a meditation on dislocation & associated undercurrents of violence. I think it will be on a few prize lists. #ozfiction

CarolynM @MrsMalaprop I‘ve still not got around to Noah Glass, but after this one I think I‘ll make it a priority. Have you read this one yet? 4w
MrsMalaprop @CarolynM I‘ve seen this one around, but haven‘t gotten to it yet. I love her work and think she is underrated. Hope you feel similarly about Noah Glass. 4w
TrishB It does sound like a serious read! 4w

Lucashenko is a Goorie (Aboriginal) author who has become a #mustreadauthor for me. Her #ozfiction is punchy, raw and very entertaining. Her novels explore the true history of Australia and I highly recommend them to anyone wanting to better understand what went on here in an accessible way. Having just read a non-fiction book about the Native Police in Queensland I appreciated reading a fictional account here. Bravo 👏
❤️💛🖤

School book club pick. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ It‘s a pick but only just. This was way too long and I found myself thinking ‘Really?!‘ quite a bit. #Ozfiction
