On the eve of Election Day, here is a wrap up of the books that I read as part of my #OpenCitizen project. The books that I currently own are in the picture above. Books read, but returned to the library, include:

Another from my #NonFictionNovember #TBR - I own a physical copy, but am listening to this on audio so I can squeeze in another #OpenCitizen read before Election Day tomorrow.

Next up for #NonFictionNovember and #SignedSunday is a book published not long after I finished Colson Whitehead's THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD. The author is local, and he and I chatted for quite awhile during his signing and talk at my favorite indie bookstore. It's a slim book, and hopefully will be a good companion to Cora's fictional story.

The concept of empathy is a common thread that runs throughout the book, especially seeing the humanity in others. While I generally enjoyed this collection of essays, I connected most with the pieces where the author seemed to take the most care and effort in trying to view a situation from another's perspective. I really enjoyed the writing style and the clarity of the author's voice throughout.

Not only is it #TBRTuesday but it's the first day of #NonFictionNovember - here is my (overly ambitious) non-fiction #TBR.

Each of the reads fits into the four categories for Non-Fiction November: New, Controversial, Important, and Fascinating. The only book not pictured is OUTLAW MARRIAGES by Roger Streitmatter, as I'll be reading that on my e-reader.

My October reads were a solid mix of awesomeness! There are graphic memoirs, graphic novel, non-fiction, historical fiction, feminist satirical poetry, memoir, and feminist religious criticism - all dealing with topical and complicated issues. I can't wait to see what November brings!

#Booktober Day 30 - Best of October

These books are definitely my favorite reads of the month, and most likely will reappear on my Best Reads of 2016 list. They share some commonalities - all are non-fiction, and all shine a bright light onto the struggles against endemic racism, sexism, poverty, and class as they exist throughout the US but especially in the Deep South.
