After watching Naked Lunch with Matt, I bought a copy of the book from the used bookstore.
I went through a whole bottle of Advil trying to finish it.
It wasn‘t a novel.
It was chaos.
I didn‘t admit that to anyone. Instead, I told people I loved it. I told people Uncle Bill was a genius. Brilliant. I pretended to get it. This impressed Matt‘s friends. It made me likeable.

Graywacke That‘s funny. I found NL unreadable. Had no idea what I was reading or what to do about it. So I gave up 1mo
Lindy @Graywacke I probably would have given up as well. Save the Advil for something worthwhile. 😉 1mo
azulaco I put Burroughs and his friends in the category of boy books. Boys/men think they are amazing and brilliant for some reason, but objectively they aren‘t that great. A lot of Hemingway falls into this category for me as well. #notimpressed I‘m sorry for the sexist comment…I‘d be infuriated if a man dismissed my favorite literature as girl books, but then women‘s writing *does* get easily dismissed as chick lit, doesn‘t it? Not Toni Morrison, but.. (edited) 1mo

Lindy @azulaco Yes, I encounter dismissal of women‘s writing all the time. 😞 1mo
TrishB @azulaco I always put American Psycho in that bracket.. 1mo
Lindy @TrishB That‘s another book I‘ve never wanted to read. 1mo
TrishB You‘re not missing anything, except misogynistic violence, that the author always says is satire and I‘m obviously too stupid to realise. 1mo
Lindy @TrishB In Gurba‘s book, she writes about the tactics male misogynists use to subjugate their wives and girlfriends. Justifying their behaviour as “a joke” is common. Like the man who repeatedly told his kids “If your mother isn‘t here when you come home from school, look under the ground in the back yard, right where the dog is buried.” 1mo
TrishB Yep- I definitely recognise that. (Not personally!! Professionally though). (edited) 1mo

Mehso-so

#Chloe's face sums up my feelings about this book... #NotImpressed. This book is between a so-so and a pan for me. I did not like how long it took to get to the plot of the book and then it was just BAM here is what the boys did. Then back to a bunch of blathering. Not one single character is likeable or even relatable. They are all horrible!

I am so sorry to everyone who joined and also disliked this book. I feel pretty bad😳

#BookToScreen

MinDea @mcipher #Chloe is so snuggly at night when I read. Is your Chloe like that? 6y
TricksyTails Squishy face! 😽♥️ Now I'm thinking to push this way way way further down my TBR. Thanks for suffering so I don't have to! 6y
squirrelbrain #Chloe actually looks like she's rolling her eyes! 6y

TrishB Great review- I hated this book too!! 6y
Kaye I didn‘t read this but the other one by the same guy. It was the weirdest book I‘ve ever read. I really hated the people in the story, but kept on reading to see what would happen. I‘m not sure why. Very oddly written book. I think the author went for that feeling: you hate the people so much, yet you want to see what happens to them in the end. 6y
MinDea @Kaye thanks for the review on it. I did wonder if all his books were like this one...sounds like it. Guess he is not an author I will ever have to pick up again... 🤔 6y
Kaye I think he‘s actually a good writer. The writing isn‘t the problem. It just seems that he must have that type of structure for his books, to make such hateful characters, you keep reading to see if they get what‘s coming to them in the end. I think he might have to change it up a bit or people won‘t keep reading his books if they are ALL the same formula. 6y
MinDea @Kaye exactly. You can't always have these hateful unlikable awful characters. People have to relate or enjoy the story on some level... 6y
[DELETED] 206653737 😹😹 she defiantly looks not impressed! 6y
mcipher #Chloe tonight is in nut job mode. She just tore open a plastic bag and scattered my new-used books across the room! 😂 But typically she is a great reading time snuggler once she‘s fine with her game of fetch. 6y
mcipher I‘ve seen a lot of hate for this book on Goodreads, too. I have it on my TBR but doubt I‘ll ever get to it. 😉 Sorry you didn‘t like it, that stinks when you finish reading and you‘re mad about wasting all that time! 6y
Scurvygirl Glad I didn‘t buy this one and just got it from library. @MinDea you always have the most honest reviews! 😹 6y
MinDea Awww thanks @Scurvygirl !!! I am glad you didn't buy it either! Better books to spend your money on! 6y
MinDea @mcipher yeah, you can probably just remove it from your TBR list! 😆😆😆 6y

I'm glad this was a library loan. -_-
It felt extremely haphazard at the end. I feel like they tried to include so many random pieces of character development that went no where. I could care less about "who did it". I really wanted more about Gymnastics #notimpressed

jessberk13 See how I steer you in the right direction!! And you were gonna BOTM that one!!! 7y
pinkpygmypuffs Ugh I'm so glad you changed my mind and showed me how to borrow books from the library 😙😙 @jessica 7y
