After 7 months of health hell & one of the worst book slumps of my life, I‘m Back! Since Jan I have read a grand total of 4 books, all rereads. But saving up, I just bought a bunch of new books(11 in total🫣)& looking through the upcoming preorders will def be making another. Some great books will be released soon! The above book was in the Miles Franklin Awards list. As Aussie as it gets, it‘s the only book as far as I know,👇(cont in comments)
Lizpixie that‘s set in the place I grew up in, Mt Druitt. The author is of Tongan/Australian descent & also grew up here in a generational household. A lot of Islanders are in the Druitt, I‘d say at least 30-40% of the population can claim Tongan/Samoan/Fijian/Maori etc descent. It‘s a poor area with a lot of public housing but that doesn‘t mean we deserve the labels that anyone who‘s grown up here has heard more than once. I‘m proud to be from Mt Druitt! 4w

Lizpixie @AmyG @Texreader @Ruthiella @squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB @Jas16 @LeeRHarry Thank you everyone for the love! I‘ve missed the community here on Litsy, I can‘t believe my 9yr anniversary was in June! As a housebound chronic illness sufferer, my world is very very small so being able to interact with all you guys from so many different parts of the world makes it that much bigger. I missed having that in my life.😘♥️♥️♥️ 4w

Lizpixie @Chelsea.Poole @charl08 @TrishB @Librarybelle @TheLudicReader @Bookwormjillk @bookandbedandtea @PurpleyPumpkin @Leftcoastzen @dabbe @LeahBergen @Jeg thank you all for the welcome back, it‘s been a very lonely 7 months without not just my Littens, but also my book worlds! George R.R.Martin was dead on with his quote about living a thousand lives, when it‘s taken away from you it‘s an awful isolating experience. Fingers crossed to #nomorebookslump! 4w
Lizpixie @CarolynM I‘ve missed you lovely! And my books, the brain fog can be debilitating. What did you think of the book? So far it‘s spot on with some of the population of my home suburb, but there‘s a lot of good people here too like my dad, the Hubbys family & families I‘ve known my whole life who‘d give you the shirt off their back. There‘s a stigma you carry being from the Druitt but I‘m proud one of us has made it on the Miles Franklin Award list! 4w
CarolynM So interesting to see the Tongan culture from the inside, but it was so warts-and-all it was bit off putting. Glad I‘m not a Tongan eldest sister! It‘s good to see own voices getting literary recognition. I love reading books that are set in places I know well, I bet you‘re loving all the Mt Druitt references. 4w
