Nona the Ninth | Tamsyn Muir

This was so wildly different from the previous books in the series, yet I loved it just as much!

Rather than the frenetic action of the prior books, this starts out slow and oddly gentle, easing into the story before the puzzle pieces start to fall into place and Muir starts hitting the reader with her signature gut-punch info bombs.

I found myself blown away by this one, and I cannot wait to see how this series goes from here!

Sabriel | Garth Nix
post image

In the last room of the Cats & Dogs exhibition there was a room with no gallery cards, which I find deeply annoying HOWEVER since I just finished Sabriel, I was like - is that ??? and it is!!!

Formally titled Girl with sword and white cat by Gregory Rogers, this was the cover illustration for Sabriel by Garth Nix, when it was published in 1995 by Harper Collins.

And tbh, if I can sneak Garth Nix into a conversation - I will.

BookmarkTavern She‘s beautiful! And look, intellectually, I know Mogget is white. I know he is. But I keep picturing him in my head as a black cat. 😂😂😂 2mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @BookmarkTavern, honestly I had that same struggle when I reread I was like - a white cat?? 😂 (edited) 2mo

Sabriel has been languishing on my “books I want to reread” stack ever since I bought the 25th anniversary edition during lockdown (so just the standard 3-5 business years on my shelf 🫣)

The beginning was a lot slower than I remembered but this is proper, detail heavy high fantasy and I‘m a little out of practice.

I switched to Tim Curry‘s audiobook version for the second half and that was a great life choice.

The Abhorsen reread is back on!

BookmarkTavern Tim Curry as the voice of Mogget is the most perfect thing I think I have ever experienced in an audiobook. 2mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @BookmarkTavern, agreed! I‘m looking forward to hearing what he does with the disreputable dog in Lirael. 2mo
BookmarkTavern He does amazing! ❤️❤️❤️ 2mo

thegirlwiththelibrarybag @BookmarkTavern, sad that he only does the first three books (I guess there was quite a long gap in publication between 3 and 4 but still) 2mo
BookmarkTavern He had his stroke before the fourth book came out, I think. 😔 2mo
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @BookmarkTavern, oh! Yeah, I hadn‘t thought of that. I had a look on Libby to see what other audiobooks he‘d done… and a series of unfortunate events came up… I don‘t really need to start another series but that‘s never held me back before 🤣 2mo
BookmarkTavern LOL He does an amazing job with those books! He also does A Christmas Carol on Audible, and he‘s Van Helsing in the audible exclusive Dracula! 2mo

Even though there have been a lot of characters with more than one personality/soul and a lot of new names for known characters, part three was soemhow easier to follow than part 2. I am glad I started Nona even though I didn‘t like Harrow. What I especially liked was the narration of John in form of psalms because it was the perfect transition to our modern world. It is definitely a possible dystopian future for all of us.

Ch 13:
They waded across, Mogget clinging to Sam‘s shoulder and the Dog swimming in the middle. Unlike most dogs, Lirael noticed, her friend actually stuck her whole head underwater, ears and all. And whatever power fast-moving water had over the Dead and some Free Magic creatures clearly didn‘t apply to the Disreputable Dog.

“How come you like to swim but hate baths?” asked Lirael curiously as they reached dry ground and found a sandy patch between the rocks to set up a makeshift camp.
“Swimming is swimming and the smells stay the same,” said the Dog. “Baths involve soap.”

“I understand. It‘s just not that simple...” the Major began. Then he paused, and his red face went blotchy and pale at the temples. Lirael watched his brow furrow up as if a strange thought were trying to break free. Then it cleared. Carefully he put his hand into his pocket, then suddenly withdrew it and punched his newly brass-knuckled fist into the Bakelite exchange board,

its delicate internal mechanisms exploding with a rush of sparks and smoke.
“Damn it! It is that simple! I‘ll order the company to go. After all, the politicos can only shoot me for it later if we win. As for you, Private, if you mention a word of this to anyone, I‘ll feed you to the cat thing here. Understand?”
“Yum,” said Mogget.

humouress 2nd interlude:
Not that landing in the Old Kingdom would be easy. Touchstone looked at the fabric wing shivering above him and hoped that most of the plane was man-made. For if parts of it were not, they would fall apart too soon, the common fate of Ancelstierran devices and machinery once they were across the Wall.

“I am never flying again,” muttered Touchstone. Then he remembered Ellimere‘s message. If they did manage to land on the other side of the Wall and get to Barhedrin, then they would have to fly somewhere in a Paperwing, to engage in a battle with an unknown Enemy of unknown powers.

Touchstone‘s face set in grim lines at that thought. He would welcome that battle. He and Sabriel had struggled too long against opponents manipulated from afar. Now whatever it was had come out in the open, and it would face the combined forces of the King, the Abhorsen and the Clayr.

Provided, of course, that the King and the Abhorsen managed to survive this flight.

I was looking forward to meet all of the character in the Locked Tomb series again, but I guess I was waiting for Nona again. She captured my heart the first time I read the book, and now she did it again. She made me laugh, she made me want to hug her, she made me very emotional. That's just Nona. And of course I understood more about what's going on than the first time around. Tamsyn Muir, I'm ready for Alecto now.

Ruthiella Just waiting patiently for Alecto to be published…😬 6mo

Another great read!
However I do wish they wouldn‘t end on such complicated cliff hangers. It wasn‘t so bad when I had the next book to keep going with, but now it‘s a waiting game for book 4 😂

101/150 This was easily my favorite book of the series, so far. This iteration of Harrowhawk was by far the most pleasant and endearing, so sweet and kind. Her fate at the end was heartbreaking 💔. I hope Muir comes out with Alecto The Ninth as soon as possible. 5 🌟 read.
