I think I prefer Erdrich‘s later novels, but this was very good. It gives context and background to her debut “Love Medicine”. Set in the early 20th century and told from two perspectives: Pauline who is adrift from real family, mentally scarred and eventually mad and Nanapush, a wise and wisecracking elder who is troubled by the continued incursion on and internal collapse of Native lands and ways.

This thriller was really powerful and so compulsively paced, I couldn‘t put it down. This was a new author for me, I believe a debut, but you‘d never know it with the seamless way she crafted this story. An archeologist working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs is drawn into a mystery from her childhood that she thought she left behind. Set in Oklahoma and Rhode Island, this story was inspired by true events.

It took a long time to explain the fragility and intricacy because no word exists alone, and the reason for choosing each word had to be explained with a story about why it must be said this certain way. That was the responsibility that went with being human, old Koosh said, the story behind each word must be told so there could be no mistake in the meaning of what had been said; and this demanded great patience and love.

Today I finished this book of poems which I‘ve been reading a bit at a time for 7 months.
Some of them I loved. Some I didn‘t connect with.
It is clear, however, she was our Poet Laureate for a reason! She can use words to paint a picture of what‘s happening in the heart.

9 April - waiting

This is where I am at this month. Not much reading is happening, but I couldn't tell you what is taking up the time instead. I finished The Odyssey. I got The Story of Art Without Men back from the library. I've been slowly making my way through The House in Paris and (not pictured) Apartment in Athens. Whereas is waaaaay out of my comfort zone and I'm not getting much out of it, but I'll keep reading in hopes that a poem will click.

We have no room on our bookshelves, but also no self-control. 😂 We spent this rainy day in two secondhand book stores and came away with these treasures. #bookhaul

Really enjoyed it.
