The Tenth Gift | Jane Johnson

I have an ARC of The Tenth Gift from when the title was ‘Crossed Bones‘. I‘ve had it on my TBR for quite a few years and the title has now changed, I don‘t know why, probably to do with reading trends at the time it was published. I‘m reading it with my online book group, https://thereadingloft.groups.io/g/main. The theme is ‘pirates‘ as it‘s ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day‘ on 19 September! 🏴‍☠️

I am loving this series so much. Love the characters growth and the adventures in each book. This book was very interesting on how the plot was done. Can't wait to read the next book. I rated the book a 4 out of 5 stars.

Finally finished this chunky book for #BookedInTime #SpanishCivilWar @Cuilin

When I saw last month‘s theme I wanted to re-read this book. I wasn‘t sure if my fond memories of it were because it was a good book or if it was the book I brought with me the first time I traveled without my kids. Sometimes just being able to think makes a book better.

Happy to say it held up and I was just as into this spy novel in translation as I was 11 years ago.

Cuilin Oh I love when that happens!! Yay! ✅🎉 4mo
ChaoticMissAdventures I remember really loving this too. So glad to hear it held up! 4mo

Today is UN International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in remembrance of the Sharpeville massacre. There are demos planned all over the world tomorrow (March, 22) https://worldagainstracism.org/2025-waraf/map-of-actions-2025/ to protest against the rise of far-right, racist governments and fascism.

I agree with the Litsy reviews - I adored this little book! So clever and funny! It was best that I didn‘t know anything about the story going in so I‘ll leave it at that, other than to say I want to read more of DeWitt.

BarbaraBB I have never even heard of it. And now I want to read it! 6mo
sarahbarnes @BarbaraBB I read it based on reviews here and I think you‘d love it. It‘s so short you can read it like a short story! 6mo
Suet624 A wonderful little story. @Barbarabb There was a wave of Litsy folks reading this a year or so ago. 6mo
BarbaraBB @Suet624 I must have missed that but will make up for it 😀 6mo
BkClubCare I love the cover (and that artist‘s pie painting even more) 6mo

Set in a small town in the Mojave desert, Driss, is found dead at the side of the road. Was it a hate crime? Told from alternating perspectives the story winds back and forth, touching on Driss‘ life, but also his family and neighbours, whilst also trying to discover the cause of his death. For me, this was about grief, combined with small town tensions. The whodunnit element I felt was less successful for me. Overall though, I enjoyed it.

I finished another book in this series. It was likable but wasn't my favorite out of the series. I rated this book a 3 out of 5 stars.
