The Jaguar Smile | Salman Rushdie

Mehso-so

When the author travels around #Nicaragua, the Cold War is still being fought on the ground there. The Soviets funded the Sandinistas and the US funded the Contras. He recounted talking to numerous folks, most supporting the Sandinistas, and told some of the country‘s history. Occasionally he‘d weigh in on his opinions, which I didn‘t feel were well-supported by his narrative. In other words, I would have liked more academic input to support ⬇️

Texreader his theses. I had a hard time connecting his logic. Maybe it was me and I was bored with the meandering nature of the book. But I always appreciate reading about travels through foreign lands, and the insight of the people. I probably would have liked it better as a travel journal. #foodandlit @Catsandbooks 3w

A great collection of Latin American short stories. Very good ones among them, and little magical realism ?

Julio Ramón Ribeyro, Luis Loayza, Alfredo Bryce Echenique, Rodolfo Hinostroza, and Fernando Ampuero are Peruvian writers so I count them for

I really enjoy nonfiction when the author travels, meets new people, and learns about new cultures. MacQuarrie follows the Andes through Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina to research the Ice Maiden, Pablo Escobar, Hiram Bingham, and so much more. He uses today's issues, such as bringing back ancient weaving and interweaves it with the archeology of yesterday's events. The entire book kept me glued. #FoodandLit @texreader @Catsandbooks

Butterfinger @texreader I dropped my phone in the ocean while I was trying to take a picture of a horseshoe crab that washed up. It took me a week to replace it. I had to catch up on my reviews. Plus, since I didn't have a phone to distract me, I read for July. 4mo

My #Roll100 books for April. 🎲 24 and 🎲 36 are pending library holds. 🎲 16 is probably going to be purchased since it‘s not at any library branches or libby.

@PuddleJumper

PuddleJumper Library holds are so unpredictable. I've had one on hold since Christmas 7mo
SconsinBookyBadger @PuddleJumper my brick & mortar library is quick on interloans, libby on the hand is slow pace even with available soon ebooks or audio 🐌 7mo

This was a challenging read. There was a plethora of characters falling in and out of the story and rarely was their end known. Also, there were hallucinations or delusions galore. This was a grim story about a grim time. Apparently, it was a story humanity felt the need to repeat.

#WickedWhispers Day 31: #Mask - I should begin Memory of Fire by Uruguayan literary author Eduardo Galeano. I fell in love with his The Book of Embraces and bought all his other books I can find. I should get to them soonest. 🙏🏼

I read the whole thing b/c there was important & interesting information, but this author did not really have the range to write this book lol. She has a college freshman‘s analysis of concepts like race, class & nationalism, and she chooses to write from the perspective of empires and states instead of a “people‘s history”… plus the chapter naming convention barely makes sense 😒 Ambitious but ultimately pretty superficial.
