“They were married on his embarkation leave. Louise made her daughters wedding dress, sitting up all night to finish it. It was of the palest pink china silk; an audacious choice destined to set off her daughter‘s delicate white skin. Instead of a veil , there was a little pill-box hat. It was the most beautiful wedding dress Louise had ever made. “

Very happy to be reading Anita Brookner again ♥️

It‘s a new month and time for #BookishMonopoly!
I rolled a 9 and landed on “Fave Author.” My all-time favorite is Anne Tyler and I‘ve read all her books—except this one. It‘s a children‘s books she published in 2005 with illustrations by her daughter, Mitra Modarressi.
Thanks again for hosting this cool challenge

I‘m a real sucker for a family saga type book, so this just hit right. It follows the life of Mary and her children and grandchildren through a number of key events and issues starting with VE Day, various royal events, touching on Brexit before ending with the beginnings of the COVID-19 pandemic. An interesting take on what Britain is, and its entrenched challenges.

As a life long Anglophile, this book is gold. A story of a British family from m 1945 through the pandemic. The ups and downs of 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England. I loved every page.

A lovely little bittersweet novel from Brookner - which I‘m pairing with a teeny village hall in the Bay of Islands.
If you already know you like Brookner you‘ll like this! If you‘re new to Brookner, its a slow unravelling of the life of Kitty - a quiet, elegant, intellectual, almost “out of time” woman in her late twenties. Kitty is an English literature lecturer; we see her analysis of a 19th c novel as well as her academic life. Quite lovely.

LeahBergen I loved this one! 👍 3mo

Reggie Ooooh, I can‘t. I tried Brookner once and it was a no. But I‘ve heard such wonderful things about her books. 3mo

CarolynM I read a few Brookner years ago. I appreciated her writing but I found her heroines incredibly frustrating @Reggie 3mo
Centique @CarolynM yes you would find this one frustrating too! I think if it was longer id get frustrated with Kitty, but theres something about being in a setting alongside Brookner‘s point of view that is quite addictive to me regardless of the characters. 3mo
Centique @Reggie I understand! Its just a flavour i like - quiet genteel desperation with a side of misogyny 😂😂 3mo

A novel that is woven together using seven historic events in British history, starting with VE Day. A very pleasant and interesting read. 🇬🇧

I love a good family saga and this one did not disappoint! Jonathan Coe did a nice job of telling the story of the Lamb family beginning on VE Day in 1945 and going until 2020 in the midst of COVID lockdowns. I learned a lot, laughed, cringed, and craved chocolate (thank God Halloween candy is in stores now 😆🤪🤤). I‘ll pick up his other works after reading this one for sure 🤗
