The Layton Court Mystery | Anthony Berkeley
post image
Panpan

As explained by the author, the evidence is laid out exactly as it is discovered with nothing hidden. This is so the reader can solve the case themselves knowing all the facts as they first appear. Roger Sheringham, a budding Sherlock investigates the case through assumptions that are quite often wrong, rather than hard evidence. I found it to be a dreary read from the start and realised very early on who was guilty. The ending was predictable

Pickpick

First published in 1897, this mystery with a female detective even has a wonderful coroner's inquest scene (for fans of courtroom drama)! Given the time period, this is a nosey, older, single woman character. But I enjoyed her self-confidence. The author apparently wrote a number of mysteries with Miss Butterworth & more with her male detective character Mr. Gryce. It's a pick for me. If you like Miss Marple, you might give Miss Butterworth a try.

I am not an inquisitive woman, but when, in the middle of a certain warm night in September, I heard a carriage draw up at the adjoining house and stop, I could not resist the temptation of leaving my bed and taking a peep through the curtains of my window.

DrexEdit First: because the house was empty, or supposed to be so, the family still being, as I had every reason to believe, in Europe and secondly: because, not being inquisitive, I often miss in my lonely and single life much that it would be both interesting and profitable for me to know. 3y
DrexEdit So... not a nosey neighbor, just missing things that are interesting and profitable. Right. 😄 3y

Now that I've got my #bookspin books, here is my amazingly ambitious #weeklyforecast for all the weeks in June. This is not even half the books I currently have checked out of the library! Plus I'm transitioning back to in-office work which means losing 2 precious hours of reading time a day in commutes! Most of these I hope to finish, but some I'll be happy if I just make some progress on them.

Here's to reading All The Books!
@cinfhen

Cinfhen Awesome stack of genres and reads for June!!! Hope you have a successful month!! I read and LOVED 3y
DrexEdit @Cinfhen I‘m looking forward to The Immortalists too! Chloe Benjamin is a local author so I really want to get this one read! 3y

Starting a new book at lunch today. I'm liking it pretty well so far. One of the Library of Congress crime classics series.

It's a nice day to lunch and read on my back porch. I think I'm going to move my office out here for the rest of the day. 🌞

Crazeedi Beautiful!! 3y
Crazeedi We live on 48 acres, but several families with land around us, so we have lots of privacy and room! What country are you in? 3y
Freespirit Hi @Crazeedi I live on the east coast of Australia. We have 100 acres on a lovely river and have farmland around us. We grow nuts and have fruit trees, a vegetable garden and chickens. It‘s a heavenly place❣️Do you have crops or cattle on your land? 3y
Crazeedi @Freespirit we rent out our field to a local farmer friend, he does corn/soybeans. I have apple trees, grapevine, elderberries, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, asparagus, horseradish, leeks, garlic growing. Also usually 4 big garden plots with vegetables, this year I'm taking a break except for a couple plants. I had overwhelming bounty last year, and I just need to concentrate of fruit this year. Plus all kinds of flowers and perennials! 3y
Freespirit @Crazeedi Your farm sounds amazing! Gardening is so good for the soul and vegetable gardening is good for the body..❤️ We try to eat something everyday from our back yard! 3y
Nute Beautiful where you are! 3y
Freespirit Thanks @Nute we really love it 💕 3y

As my first reading experience with AC, APFoR demonstrated why AC had such a lasting, immense legacy, but it also disappointed me. The intro chapter is fantastic. The ending is good, but I saw a lot more potential in other possibilities. #AgathaChristie #classicmystery

Book 2 of 2020, listened on Hoopla. This is the first Ellery Queen book, com 1929. So it‘s dated, and is also not the kind of mystery that the reader can solve due to info not being shared with the reader. I was on the right track though, wondering why they weren‘t taking a certain line of inquiry! The exact motive I was nowhere near—it is very 1929. I may listen to book 2 some time. #classicmystery #mystery

News that is new to me this morning, the Library of Congress is partnering with Poisoned Pen Press for a new series of crime classics, drawn from books in the LOC collections.
Launching spring 2020. 👍📚
