Une forme de vie | Amelie Nothomb
post image
Mehso-so

An average Nothomb with some brillant parts. This is part of her exploration of her life as fiction. Amélie, the writer, has a correspondance with an American soldier in Irak. In Nothomb‘s classic way aka it‘s self-centred and a bit precious.
But, the idea is brillant. This soldier who gets hooked on food to combat fear, guilt in a war, society‘s views of being obese, celebrity and reconnaissance as a way to exist are done with panache.

writerlibrarian And keeps you reading. There is a lot of self reference to her own books, life, etc. That‘s tedious. The ending is very much Nothomb. Not surprising as I read this 10 years removed not because the ending is out of date but because it‘s so banal now which says a lot about the emptiness that can be found all around us right now. #booked2019 #fall #bookaboutaddiction (edited) 5mo

Stage 4 is for the sprinters. I'm gonna be done with the Nothomb tonight. It's an average one so far.

My yearly Nothomb. It will also fit in the read harder challenge. Stage 3, a few hills, a sprint and a long, long road. Sagan still has the green jersey. #readinginfrenchjuly #tourdefrancereading

An author seeks a friend to drink champagne and talk about literature. Perfect!

Panpan

Verhulst would have done better to stick to his journalistic instincts in these fictional vignettes chronicled by a photographer and resident of a Belgium asylum for those entering the country illegally. The one character trait he seemed to be going for in his MC was 'unlikable', but that and a bunch of cynical & ostentatiously clever wordplay doesn't make a character. Too bad- it seems like the same events could have been compellingly portrayed.

merelybookish Sorry it was a disappointment but I do enjoy a pan! 😬😉 1y
Billypar @merelybookish I do too in a weird way- I have so few that I have to savor them 😋 1y

The canal, en route to Luxembourg, has flooded, and the water level must drop before we can fit the boat under the next bridge. This has given me just enough time to wrap up the retelling of my adventures in Belgium.

The short version? An amazing cookbook, an excellent recital of the Battle of Waterloo, and waffles. 😄

I found an amazing cookbook, so I bought the ingredients to make (in the hostel kitchen) the delicious street waffles I had eaten in Liege.

Unlike any waffles I have tried, they have a crunch from pockets of sugar and can be enjoyed at room temperature - like a cookie. The recipe was unlike any waffle recipe I have tried as well! A unique process with 2 batters and pearl sugar. I will be raving about this book, and the recipe, on my blog soon. 😊

Bruges was his dead wife. And his dead wife was Bruges. The two were united in a like destiny. It was Bruges-la-Morte, the dead town entombed in its stone quais, with the arteries of its canals cold once the great pulse of the sea had ceased beating in them.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Ever see In Bruges? I cussin‘ love that movie. 2y
Bookwomble @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Yes, it's a fantastic film. We visited Bruges a few years ago, and I'm not sure how easy it is to throw yourself from the tower in a hurry, which is probably a good thing ☺ It's a beautiful city if you ever get the chance to visit. 2y
