My admiration for Manguel is no secret, so when I ordered a previously owned copy it was quite the surprise to receive a signed edition. #marchmadness #specialedition @alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @eggs

This is an excellent set of lectures about intolerance in society written in 2007 which unfortunately is all too relevant today. He uses films and stories like The Epic of Gilgamesh to draw parallels between what‘s happening today and stories of the past. I read this awhile ago and have forgotten a lot of what I wanted to talk about, but especially loved ‘The Screen of Hal‘. Manguel is a always a Must Read from me. Five stars.

Bookwomble Got me at "Epic of Gilgamesh" ?? 3y
Palimpsest @Bookwomble The Tablets of Gilgamesh lecture was one of my favorites in the collection. If you get a chance to read it I‘d love to hear what you think. 😊 3y
Bookwomble @Palimpsest It may be a short while before I buy it. Bookshops just reopened in my neck of the woods and I've spent my allowance already 💸😄 I'm reading Borges essays at the moment, so perhaps after I've finished that. Thanks for popping the Manguel on my radar 🙂 3y

Palimpsest @Bookwomble understandable. I had this book on my shelf and just recently got to it. Alberto Manguel knew Borges as a teen or young man and read to him. I haven‘t read that book yet, but would like to but I have liked everything else I‘ve read by him. (edited) 3y
Palimpsest @Bookwomble if you‘re interested in the audio instead you can find the lectures on the link I pasted. The one about Gilgamesh is the second lecture! 😊 3y
Bookwomble @Palimpsest That's fantastic! Thank you for the link 😊 I like listening to podcasts while I'm cooking, so I'll definite give these a listen. 3y
vivastory I had NO idea that this book existed! Ordering asap! 3y
Palimpsest @vivastory I‘ve read seven of his books and love them all. Why I haven‘t read everything he‘s written yet I don‘t know because I always love them. 😊 3y
vivastory I've only read 3 from cover to cover, but each one of them left a significant impact on me. I also ordered Reader's Diary when I ordered this just now. 3y

A day late for #two4tuesday

1. In the whole house, about 2500 since the last purge. I have more than twice that at the uni.
2. The office shelves transformed into a minimally good-looking backdrop for my course recordings.

Thank you to @thespineview Thank you @Eggs for remembering me. (Edited to add @eggs whose tag vanished when I posted)

marleed Oh I love looking at the bookshelves of hosts and guests on tv these days. Today I noted an interviewee was quick to get his well-place Kamala Harris memoir in the shot! Your shelves are beautiful! (edited) 4y
tournevis @marleed Thank you! I love looking at shelves too. My favourite are those behind sports journalists, they're devoid of books and if there's books, it's only sports bios or theirs. That's it! Carefully placed books are fun to spot, like in the last 5 months, books on Trump have disappeared from US shelves and appeared on Canadian shelves, because you can't afford to be associated with T* in the US, but you should look like you denounce him up here! 4y
TheSpineView Never too late! Thanks for playing! 😘📚🌞😊 4y

“The imaginary reality of books contaminates every aspect of our life.” So true! How often do you find your mind drifting to the characters in a book while going about your day? Their imaginary reality really does stick with you even when you‘re not actively reading. An insightful and thoughtful read about moving a personal library of 35,000 volumes from France to Manhattan.

Weaponxgirl Yes! If I‘m not careful it can affect my mood too if I read too many dark and deep books (probably my favourite type of reading) 5y

The impossible task of every reader is to rebuild the ideal library.
