A Wish in the Dark | Christina Soontornvat

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander month so that our theme this Monday! #AAPI

Christina Soontornvat wrote the tagged book- a Thai-inspired retelling of Les Mis with magical elements that rocked my world and in doing so became a must-read author for me! In this version, the daughter of the prison warden hunts down a prison-born boy who is trying to escape his doomed life.

What titles would you recommend for #MiddleGradeMonday ?

Mehso-so

This book for me was so-so everything was everywhere in this book one happy scene than it would quickly switch to a intense scene. I'd still read it when I get bored for nostalgic reasons 6/10 for me.

For the people who have read this book you'll understand.

0/5⭐ I feel horrible for the ADHDer who is subject to these methods.

The part that broke me: “Better [your college kid] should run out of clothes once a week and then stand staring at the dryer in their bathrobe, totally focused, because they are hungry and need clothes to enter the dining hall.“

Competition?...I'm really not fond of competition.

This poetry book would be a great way to introduce Greek Mythology to students in an interesting, engaging way. During a week on Greek culture, the teacher could read one of these poems a day, but have the book present so that the students could read more of them if they wanted to.

Pickpick

Echo Echo is a collection of poems that bring several Greek myths to life. Many famous Greek myths are included such as the story of Athena and Arachne. With strong themes and poetic structure, this a great poetry collection for any reader.

This book would be great to use in Social Studies. Students could do projects on Greek Mythology and use the poems as a resource or a starting point.

Pickpick

This book includes poems about Greek Myths. When reading, you can feel the attitudes and emotions that each of the gods or goddesses is feeling within their poem. At the bottom of the page under the poems, that gives a little more background to the character. I did not notice any rhyming within the poems, but I did notice the different paces.
