I think I got this! Say hello to the Karpoi. They‘re grain spirits - children of the original Greek gods, Tartarus and Gaea. I know this thanks to Percy Jackson rather than that Ancient History paper I took in university 😂😂😂 Anyway they‘re one of PJs enemies. Great scene in this book where the heroes are sitting recovering in a field and the wheat grabs one of them and drags them away! (Art is from the graphic novel)

Centique PS I‘ve now read seven of these books aloud to my kid and have gained a healthy respect for Rick Riordan. They‘re action packed with fully formed characters, girls kick butt and save the world frequently and there‘s good diversity in the later novels. 4y
TheKidUpstairs Great pick! I've never read any Riordan myself, but from what I've heard he really knows his mythologies! 4y
Cinfhen Very cool 😎 well done 👍🏻 4y
CouronneDhiver That‘s how I imagine germs looking. Lol 🦠 4y

A 1947 Canadian classic about a boy growing up on the Saskatchewan prairies.

Tamra I love prairie settings! 4y
merelybookish @Tamra This is a comig-of-age story. I read it a long time ago but I liked it at the time. 4y
mydearwatson I think a vocal music class I used to work with sang a song titled this. 4y

Cinfhen Well played 🙌🏻🧡 4y
merelybookish @mydearwatson The book title is from a poem by Christina Rossetti. Maybe that was the song? 4y
mydearwatson Yeah, I think it was! 4y
merelybookish @Cinfhen I picked the wheatiest cover. 🙂 4y

“All human wisdom is contained in these two words - Wait and Hope”

I was not familiar with this song, nor the story that inspired it. But it seems to me that all those involved know the meaning of these words all too well.

Bonus: I was also unfamiliar with the word “wheat king”. I love the imagery of this agricultural lingo.

TheKidUpstairs A beautiful, haunting quote. Well played! 4y

I don‘t have any #wheatkings - just some madness, death and thorns 😁
I have actually read all of these!

Tanisha_A Love the cover of The Madness of Kings! Looks like it's a quite a ride, that book? 4y
batsy Yes, what @Tanisha_A said! Sounds like a super interesting read. 4y
TrishB @Tanisha_A @batsy it‘s a fascinating read! It‘s quite academic in some places - but not dry, still remains interesting. 4y

When I think of wheat, I think of the prairies where I grew up in Winnipeg and in Wichita, which led me to thinking of Willa Cather. I‘ve been wanting to read my Antonia for a long time now. Maybe this will be the year. I‘ve put it off after disliking o‘pioneers in middle school. #readinggrudge #timbittunes #wheatkings

Cinfhen I definitely get the wheat/prairie connection 😉😊 4y
Blaire @Cinfhen now thinking about wheat I‘m wanting to reread the little house on the prairie books. I loved those! 4y
Tanisha_A I want to read this one too! 4y

Cathythoughts I loved this book. ♥️👍🏻 4y
readinginthedark You read O! Pioneers in middle school? I don't know if I would have liked it at that age. It seems like a book that one can understand so much better as an adult. 🤔 I enjoyed this one when I read it in high school, though! 4y
Blaire @readinginthedark I may have to go back to it. We read it in 7th grade. I just remember being bored by it at the time. 4y
readinginthedark Yeah, I could see that. Cather's books are pretty subtle, I think, all about the land and slowly building character relationships. They'd be hard to read at that age. 4y
