#CurrentRead — I always have a mystery going. This one hasn‘t ensnared me yet, but I‘m engaged enough with the audiobook to see it through. I think my issue is that right now I like none of the characters. That‘s always a barrier for me. We shall see 🤓
so-soSolid narration by Saskia Maarleveld kept me listening to this one despite the so-so story. The central metaphor simply didn‘t work for me. There was a lot going on and I‘m kind of curious to see how a different editor would‘ve shaped this story.

I think I expected more; only a soft pick for me and possibly only because having come through the English department at Melbourne Uni a little less than a decade later, it felt very familiar. For me, this was a cross between Helen Garner‘s diaries and Miranda Darling‘s Thunderhead (as an example of a fictional work that engaged with Virginia Woolf) but not as compelling as either. Not sure what else was up for the Stella?
pickThis was my pick this year for #mummydaughterbookclub and we all really liked it. It gave me some Secret History vibes early on, which I loved, but then it turned into its own interesting story. I hope Knight writes more!

2. We do not care that our sectional sofa has a huge tear in the fabric and little dog bites in the foam. We are too cheap to buy new furniture, and so we ordered this book nerd blanket off of Etsy to cover up somebody's shame. We like it better than a new couch anyway!
pickI enjoyed this more than I expected (after not getting on with an earlier book by de Kretser). The protagonist is intelligent & bookish but it‘s saved from being pretentious by her dysfunctional but (sort of) relatable love life & the on point, muscular writing. A great counterpoint to Woolf‘s work, satire on academia & self-deprecating coming of age. Visceral details felt true to Melbourne & I liked the friendships. Like being with a smart friend
Visited my mom for a few days this week and spent a fair bit of time playing with these guys. Now I'm home and plan to get a lot of reading time in over the next couple of days.
Had a blast today at Queers and Quills book convention!
There is always stress about how organized things are and how good the attendees will be. But not only did a bunch of attendees give volunteers presents (goodie bags, bookmarks, candy), but everyone was just lovely 😍.
Not a big ❤️ reader I didn't know most of the authors but everyone today was so nice, and we were packed! I am excited to help out again next year!! What a success.
