Very interesting. The author discusses several features of Pre-Columbian societies, such as cultural practices, government structures, monumental architecture, writing, and agricultural practices. He also discusses theories behind when and how indigenous people arrived in America, potential population size before European arrival, and ideas as to why diseases brought by European explorers were so devastating to indigenous people. Worth reading.

AnnCrystal Grand review 👏🏼☺️👍🏼📚💫.

Been meaning to read this for years...I'm just terrible.

The one thing I usually frown about, is when a history suggests that the original people of the Americas came from somewhere.

I know science suggests otherwise. But I always believed that there were tribes, clans, etc. of people all over the world, and with time, these groups of people merged.

My people hold a firm belief that we came from no where. That we've here since time immemorial.

AnnCrystal You may be interested in reading the research of Christopher Davis and Anna Roosevelt. Two archaeologists who have explored the Caverna da Pedra Pintada (Cave of the Painted Rock) in Brazil, where they find some of the earliest known paintings in the Americas.

“one of which is considered the oldest solar observatory in the world.“

AnnCrystal You may also enjoy reading about The Ancient One (Kennewick Man).

America denied indigenous Americans the right to claim this ancestor for years, until Danish Scientists stepped helped in to help.

Rome753 @AnnCrystal Thanks for sharing all of this! It's interesting to hear what others have to say. Thanks for the link as well. I'll definitely have to look into their work. 1mo
Rome753 @AnnCrystal Thanks for this link. I know that it's been difficult regarding human remains. Nice ti hear that some scientists were able to help regarding this. 1mo
AnnCrystal @Rome753 Glad when I encounter people who are willing to learn this history about our American lands.

I'm still learning about my own ancestry World. My mom raised me to know my roots. And so much more information is now, more easily, available...coming directly from our Native Country.

📚✨😉👍🏼💫.

AnnCrystal I will forever be thankful to the Danish Scientists who helped identify, The Ancient One.

I was absolutely fascinated by the debate this received. I truly believe scientists could “discover“ the proof needed to show that Indigenous have been upon the lands of the Americas since the beginning of time, and some would still state “Native Indigenous ARRIVED in the Americas before previously believed.“ Seriously crazy 🤗😂😉📚💫.

GingerAntics @TheBookHippie the whole series is totally worth a watch! It‘s SO good! The octopus was especially exciting, though. I‘ve been looking forward to it since the series started in the middle of reading Other Minds. 7mo

Sooo disappointed by this book 😭 I loved 1491 so I was hoping to love this too, but despite all the extremely interesting historical research, he does not have the range to discuss globalization… like this book DRIPS with neoliberal ideology. To him, the terms of the debate are free trade or no trade (fair trade is not an option) so naturally the answer is free trade (that is, capitalism) because people gotta have their commodities, of course 😒

I read the whole thing b/c there was important & interesting information, but this author did not really have the range to write this book lol. She has a college freshman‘s analysis of concepts like race, class & nationalism, and she chooses to write from the perspective of empires and states instead of a “people‘s history”… plus the chapter naming convention barely makes sense 😒 Ambitious but ultimately pretty superficial.
