This has been on my shelf forever… and while it took a few pages (I had to reread the first 5 pages) to get a handle on the writing style, and then it blew me away. I could almost feel this story settling over me like a blanket while reading. Set in Cairo, this tells a story in 4 different perspectives.

Pontius Pilate offered the people a choice (to keep his own hands clean): The Messiah or Barabbas. Pilate was sure no one wanted to free Barabbas, but he was wrong. No one talks about how this substitution affected Barabbas. What made him worth this 2nd chance? What if he just can‘t make himself believe? I love this short search for identity. Excellent read. 239/1,001 #1001Books December‘s #TBRTarot: author whose last name begins w/ “L”

A friend and I are reading these Alice Munro stories, one at a time, getting together to discuss each one. 💖 We just finished “The Progress of Love.”

This 1993 novel was rejuvenated when Müller won the Nobel Prize. It is powerful, but tough going and I struggled through (but felt it!). A series of sketches of life as a college-educated political dissident under Ceaușescu, with constant harassment, abuse, economic strain and suicides. Relentlessly bleak.

Suet624 I‘m curious about this one but I‘m not sure I can handle more bleak. 5mo
Graywacke @Suet624 Müller has a thing for soul destroying books. 5mo
