Such a weird, fun, odd, interesting, and quirky book! This book looks at classics, bestsellers, award winners and analyzes them using modern tech like word counts & algorithms. All those “rules of English” you learned in school, are they right? Do “good” books statistically have less cliches, exclamation points, or -Ly descriptors? What defines good? What is an author‘s favorite word? The answers are fascinating, and sometimes just plain weird.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I finally finished this one @tjwill and it‘s already on its way back to you. Thank you for being so patient as I went through a bit of a book slump there, with physical books returning last. Another great year for #NForNonfiction @daniwithtea @BarbaraTheBibliophage 2y
squirrelbrain Sounds fascinating - stacked. 2y
tjwill @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I totally understand going through book slumps! It was a good #NforNonfiction year! (edited) 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @tjwill Yes it was, we always get a good mix of topics, and books I never knew I needed to read. 2y

I wondered about this when we read this book for #NForNonfiction and she mentioned that some of the wild chimpanzees got and still had issues from contracting polio crossed over from humans. I‘m guessing it‘s only a matter of time until this effects the few wild primates left. 😢

This conversation between Abrams and Goodall ranges far and wide, while still primarily focusing on its subject. Goodall believes that hope includes action, not just wishful thinking. And there are four specific reasons to remain hopeful despite news coverage of Earth‘s “dumpster fires.” It‘s a bit Polyanna, but mostly optimistic. Short but strongly positive.

kamoorephoto I‘m insanely jealous that a fellow animal rescue friend of mine got to meet her not that long ago. Jane Goodall is an absolute idol of mine and an absolute gift to this earth. 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @kamoorephoto ZOMG. That must have been amazing! 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @kamoorephoto I would be insanely jealous too! 3y

I couldn‘t possible love this book more! The topic is both timely and relevant, even though the book covers decades of music and social history. And Geffen does an amazing job of analyzing musical styles and musicians‘ personal experiences and choices. Their writing has some truly luminous moments as well. Thank you @daniwithtea for adding it to our #nfornonfiction #groupread !

I loved the first 2/3 of this, the experiences of her young life, the initial wonder of arriving in Africa, and eventually of meeting the Chimpanzees. Such beauty and communion with nature, it was magical to read. The last 1/3 was much harder, it‘s about climate change and species destruction and her reasons for hope, as the title says. However her reasons for hope seem like opportunities missed reading this now in 2021, 21 yrs after publication.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa #NForNonfiction I‘ll get this one off to you in the mail this afternoon or tomorrow (whenever my car comes back from the garage) @tjwill Great read @BarbaraTheBibliophage and @daniwithtea 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I agree with your assessment. And she must have too. There‘s a similar, hopefully updated book coming out soon. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Yea… I could feel that so bad by the end. It ended with a great little pick me up after 9/11 that I‘m reading 21 years later as we are finally leaving and the Taliban is overrunning the whole country again. It felt pretty bleak, I couldn‘t help thinking of Malala as I‘ve been watching the news reports. And the climate positivity about change as we got a Red Alert this summer..her update will need an update 3y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I feel the stressors also. And everything is just all crazy up in the air right now. I agree, it‘s a hard topic to stay current on. That said, I have an ARC for the new book from the publisher. Happy to send it to you once I‘m done! 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Great job snagging an ARC. I‘ll decide once I see your review! I love her writing, but not sure I can handle her positivity at the moment (if that makes sense). 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I feel ya. I have to finish it fairly soon, so we shall see … 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BarbaraTheBibliophage Yes it‘s surreal times when her positivity feels depressing. (edited) 3y

I finished up two left overs from July this week and read 2 short stories…. Otherwise I‘ve dived into 3 buddy reads and still plugging along on my #NForNonfiction pick (from last month), I‘m determined to finish it this week and pass it on!

That‘s it for the short #BookReport & #WeeklyForcast

Megabooks I‘m interested to read what you think of Rainbow‘s new one. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Megabooks Me too! But as usual with me…I buy 1 I‘m super excited about, but then need to read all the library books due back first or other book reading commitments and that new release sits and waits. 😂 3y
Megabooks That happens to me with audiobooks. If I don‘t put my purchased audiobooks on my bookspin bingo board, they don‘t get read! 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Megabooks I don‘t understand why we do this to ourselves, but we do. Maybe it‘s some long game to make sure we always have a great book waiting in the wings 😂 3y

I had to google these after they were mentioned in the book…. Tiny antelope the size of a hare, her description said….google did not disappoint. So cute!!! Look at those eyelashes.

Sorry I‘m taking so long with this book, I‘m stopping to google way too much! @tjwill I promise I‘ll get it finished and off to you this week.

Look at them @daniwithtea & @BarbaraTheBibliophage

There was a Prince section in this book that briefly talked about his break with his record company when he changed his name to the symbol. The rift was about the fact that he was putting out music too fast, they didn‘t want him saturating the market, they wanted to make fans wait & clammed for the next release, but Prince didn‘t want to be held back. ⤵️

#NForNonfiction

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ I saw this and was floored at just how much unreleased music he had backlogged in his vaults. He was truly prolific, no wonder he felt stifled by industry execs! There is literally enough material for a new album, every year, for the rest of the Millennium.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @TheBookHippie That is amazing, I get chills just reading that, I can‘t imagine being there. 3y
tjwill Wow! I‘ve also heard Dolly Parton say that she has so much unreleased music that it will continue to be released even after she is gone. 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @tjwill And isn‘t that crazy, I can see why artists chafe at that. When they create something they worked hard on and liked, of course they want to share it. 3y
GingerAntics That would be awesome!!! 3y
