A short but very timely read, I breezed through this book and by all the quotes I posted you should be able to tell that I found most of it very useful & quite interesting, even if disheartening at times. Definitely a must read for our current times....although sadly it most likely won't be read by the portion of the population that could benefit from it. 😕

Honest, open, unabashedly raw account of one transwoman's journey from awareness, through her evolution into womanhood. She also isn't afraid to reveal all the pitfalls and traps for young woman with little to no resources and very little family support or understanding. You will want to weep for her even as she details how much worse things could have been. This audiobook was all the better for being read by the author & told in her #OwnVoices

Sue I really loved how frank and open she was in the telling. Such an amazing lady. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Sue I completely agree 7y

Very moving graphic novel, with contributions from multiple artists expressing their fear, sadness, loss, hope, and bravery (plus so much more) following The Pulse nightclub shooting. Definitely worth checking out, but bring your tissues with you. #ManyStoriesMonday #OwnVoices #MulticulturalMonday #DiversityMonday

Cinfhen Even though I don't enjoy GN, your review and this awesome cover has peaked my curiosity- stacked! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Cinfhen Just about every 1-2 pg spread is a different short comic, and they are almost all about finding out the news, dealing with lost loved ones, etc. So very emotional, and yet very powerful. (edited) 7y
Gezemice I just ordered it. 7y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice That does not at all surprise me! I downloaded it from hoopla myself. But if was ever matched with the Litsy equivalent of a pen pal or Pinterest buddy, etc...you would be it! We always seem to be picking up similar books at about the same time. 7y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa lol I saw it on your Goodreads feed. 😁😉 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice Awwww, that bursts my bubble a little. LOL! I've been downloading a lot of comics from the Hoopla app through my library. They had that one this month, the new Kindred graphic version, and I usually pick up The Walking Dead through them as well. 7y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I have been looking to read more graphic novels, so that part is true. This is new for me, started last year. There was a category in a challenge to read a graphic novel. Once I figured out they are not all about superheroes, I was off! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice Same here, and same challenge. Before that it was only The Walking Dead comics. But that challenge and then all the great Litsy recommendations really helped me. 7y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa So maybe the penpal thing is true, after all. 😁😉🤗 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Gezemice Either way, we do seem to be in sync more often than not. 7y

Finishing up one audiobook (a re-read for me) before a discussion group & starting the other for @LitsyFeministBookClub (better late than never😉). Looks like a good set for a #MulticulturalMonday #ManyStoriesMonday #WNDB photo.

Side note: Between the World and Me is even more powerful on audio & the 2nd time around...so much more has happened this past year right in front of our eyes, live on the news, that it's even more visceral this time 😢

Hooked_on_books I'm just starting Hidden Figures, too, so you're not the only one behind the 🎱 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Hooked_on_books Yay... we'll be behind, but in good company! 7y

The best books about a group you might have little knowledge or understanding of, is a book that let's you sit and have a conversation with them about how they think, feel, what works for them and what doesn't. This book with one-on-one conversions with trans teens from different parts of the gender identity spectrum is a great place to start putting real faces and stories to the experiences of others. Worth the read! #WNDB #ManyStoriesMonday

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @8little_paws Looks good, I added it. I also added Being Jazz after reading this one. 7y
johnnie_cakes You should also check out The Other Boy, it's middle grade fiction featuring a trans character. 7y

becausetrains I love that quote. Exploring one's gender is pretty much a universal part of our lives from youth onward, even more so than our sexuality. Boys try on girls' clothes and vice versa, to see what rings true. Sometimes the parts don't match the thoughts, and that's been consistent for a subset of people over thousands of years of recorded history. In other words, there is a whole bunch of gray area between purely male and purely female. 7y
LauraJ Yep, some people have brain wiring that doesn't match the genitalia they were born with. V.S. Ramachandran does a great job explaining this. 7y

JSW True story. 7y
Suet624 Just seems so obvious, doesn't it?? 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Suet624 It does.... but lately I'm finding that what I thought of as obvious (common sense) needs to be said out loud for many people. 7y
Suet624 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I completely agree that folks have lost some common decency and compassion. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Suet624 Yep... so I'm making an effort to say the obvious out loud more often. Maybe if it's heard more often it might become the 'it' thing again. 7y

I remember reading this on my phone while making a huge pot of chili, browning and stirring with one hand and swiping pages with the other because I #CouldntPutItDown even though we had dinner guests coming! #unputdownable #somethingforsept #septphotochallenge @RealLifeReading A good one for #MulticulturalMonday #ManyStoriesMonday #WNDB #DiversityMonday too.

RealLifeReading Great chili-stirring book-reading memory!! 8y
KVanRead @RealLifeReading Ha! It is though! I often think of it when I make chili! Nowadays I'm probably listening to an audiobook- oh, how I've grown 😂 8y
GinaAnderson I've done that! Different book but it was definitely chili. 8y
